We're closer to first than they are to us. That's the one that bewilders me.

Without wishing to state the obvious, u'd expect the points difference towards the bottom to be closer than towards the top.

Whereas the top 4/5/6 can reasonably expect to gain 3 points most weeks, those are the bottom would generally do well to get 1.

Right, but it follows that if half of the teams are in a relegation scrap, then at least a quarter of the matches on any given game week will be between two clubs in that relegation scrap, where there are three points up for grabs.
