Transfers The Summer Transfer Edging Thread 2025

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He was at Lyon and had one maybe 2 seasons playing there. One truely elite game playing Man City.

Either way was poor from the start of his time at Spurs under Poch. Didn't improve under Mourhino or under coaches at all the loan clubs.

Only common factor I could see is he was very happy to be highly paid, but found football to be a necessary evil into which he put in as much as effort as felt like on the day.
Biggest waste of talent I've ever seen in a Spurs shirt. The 5 or so games where he looked like he fancied it he was phenomenal.

Big signings are usually not worth the money. Here are the records (excluding Wirtz).

Enzo Fernandez
Moses Caicedo
Jack Grealish
Declan Rice
Antony
Josep Gvardiol
Harry Maguire
Darwin Nunez
Jason Sancho
Romelu Lukaku

Only three of those players have helped their team to win a CL or PL. Gvardiol will probably end up being worth it. Grealish is hotly debated but I’d say hes had just one good season. Darwin Nunez is widely seen as a flop who Liverpool are looking to sell.

Spending huge sums of money on transfer fees usually doesn’t do much for you. You have to buy the right player at the right price. That’s a lot harder than just spending cash.

We can play the same game with our signings too and the top end isn’t clearly better.

We were talking about Liverpool here. Stay on track.

They broke transfer records for Alisson and VVD and those players formed the spine of their PL and CL winning team. They’ve just won the PL and broken a transfer record again to win the CL.

It’s called conviction. I hate that they have owners who are committed to winning not talking about winning.

You can talk about big transfers not being worth it but all those big transfers went to teams trying to win.

How many of the recent PL and CL titles were won by teams that didn’t have the conviction to pay top end wages and/or top end transfer fees?

The aim is to have the best possible players on the pitch. The question, to which there is no clear answer, is how best to do that.

The list of 70-80m+ players has more flops than successes. Players who tear up Portugal can be good or they can be underwhelming (Darwin Nunez anyone?).

I’m happy with our data led approach at the moment. If we could buy like Brighton then I’d be delighted. However sure it would be exciting to pay more in wages for the right players. But that’s not an end in itself.

For me the key is having a coach who can improve players and make the whole better than the sum of its parts. We haven’t had that since Poch so I’m excited and optimistic.

Why the fuck would you want to buy like Brighton? What do they win? Absolutely fuck all, that’s what.

They buy to sell players to clubs who win things. How many domestic leagues and European trophies have been won by “Data led” recruitment clubs? Pretty much fuck all. Data led is way to maximize limited resources like a business would but completely ignores the fact that football is also sport and not exclusively a business.

Even the original money ball baseball team didn’t win anything

I don't disagree but there's also the issue of us being absolutely shit at big money signings. Ndombele being a great example. Sanchez, Richarlison, Bentley and a whole host of others.

We need to spend big but spend wisely.

So because we’ve been shit at it that means we should just run away scared to do it again?

You get better at something the more you do it. Just need some courage and conviction.

Scout your balls off, be as certain as you can about your top target and do what it takes to get them.

You think à Brighton XI from the past 5/6 years wouldnt be a CL team?

Their problem is that they sell, not their buying.

I think I need better glasses. I've re-read my post but can't see anything about saying we should just run away scared.

Also he was signed to play Poch’s style of football and almost immediately had Jose’s anti-football thrust on him which he was completely unsuited to.

Go watch MPs pressers in the early part of his last season.... When asked about Ndombele; you can tell he almost immediately had buyers regret over him.

100% - Every team has had shite signings - Off the top of my head
  • Scouse - Nunez £85M; Keita £50M+
  • Red Scum - Pepe £70M+
  • Chavs - Lukaku £100M; Kepa 70M; Mudryk £60M
  • City - Grealish £100M
  • ManU- Too many to name
Doesn’t mean you stop signing players like a scared little girl - You learn from your mistakes and keep going.

Levy’s cheap wage strategy just got us 17th in the League so maybe it’s time to change things up again.
