True but the way they are now used is different. Before the obsession with high press and ball retention DM’s sat in front of the back four and their main job was protection. Now the best defensive midfielder often does the 8 role like Rice and Kante. While the 6 role is now often a playmaker from deep enabling a team to keep ball or press high. Almost like the 8 and 6 switched.

Imagine dropping a 23year old Roy Keane into this squad.

Still I’m in the Vitinha/Modric clone camp though, over Kante. Think in the right structure we do have multiple ball winner/tacklers (proof will be in the pudding of course), so I favour a more technical DM.

I’ll always remember the season that we had the Klinsmann and famous five, when we were playing really well against them at WHL. Dumitrescu had a good start to the game. His trademark move was to drop his shoulder, beat his fullback and cut into the midfield from the left.

He did it two or three times and went on a mazy run that led to attacks. The next time he tried it, he beat the fullback, cut inside and smash, Keane absolutely cleared him out. Probably stood over him and told him not to try that again. Needless to say Dumitrescu was a ghost the rest of the match and United ended up winning 1-0.

There's WAY too many variables to even think about - other top teams under-performing, key injuries to ours or their's, war, famine, plague...

He was a useless footballer that would look like shit in any system. Always a few steps behind. Never in the right place. Always giving away the easy turnovers, always putting teammates in trouble by making alibi passes. But sometimes he could pick a long cross and score a goal a season.

No he wouldn't look good in Frank's system. He would look exactly like the useless player he is.

The release clause is irrelevant for most transfers in spain, they are set high in the main.
