Why are they the "2 main options"?

The starting point should be the decision about what profile/skillset of player we need; not tossing about names based on who's hottest.

Wharton vs Baleba as a shortlist indicates an unfocused agenda..... I hope the club are approaching this differently.

If rumours are true that Frank wanted Norgaard then baleba is in keeping with the holding destroyer profile he was after

Maybe there are others but we are talking about top draw midfielders here not potentials. There is already quite a bit of smoke around us wanting Wharton and Baleba is brilliant footballer in a similar role. The other players mentioned for the 6 appear to be a bit of a step down or more of a gamble. I am sure the club have a full list but an elite 6 is something every top team has, it’s an essential.

Agree, our team will benefit from adapting to play with a top tier CDM as opposed to a middling to decent one who happens to have some relevant attributes

Missed my point.

You yourself just described them as opposites.

I get that but Frank might not be as fixated as Ange was with specific profiles. For Ange we needed out and out of wingers who are all about dribbling and pressing, his system had little flexibility, similar to Conte it needed to a certain thing. Frank by contrast is a manager known for tactical flexibility so the idea of having an elite off the ball 6 might not be an issue compared to the quality he possess. Norgaard at Brentford is closer to Baleba than Wharton and that was his 6 there yet we are linked with Wharton, that to me suggests a very different approach, one that prioritises ability over specific system fit.

You don't just blow 80m on a MFer without being focussed on what you want from said signing.........

Not only is that sloppy recruitment that implies no coherent gameplan; it also completely flies in the face of the mooted data-driven approach of Lange (and fwiw Frank's last club).

Simple fact is who'evers on our shortlist for any one position; there's shouldn't be players with polar skillsets on it.

(The comparison to Ange is flawed - not to mention moot in terms of our future..... Why? We were told by Ange himself he doesn't 'see' roles akin to DM, CM etc. "they're all just MFers".... + In terms of the wingers thing he never played them like that here anyway..... Same way reality conflicted with the theory with his approach to STs too......... We simply didn't get the blueprint that people assumed he brought from Celtic.)

Frank (to his credit) may be willing to, and capable of adapting; but we're not gonna get some fundamentally different system each week..... He's coming to a club with the expectation to try to impose their will each week; not to disrupt and counter like might have been acceptable at Brentford.

Aren’t release clause values fairly widely reported for a number of players every transfer window by media outlets? How is this any different?

It's not..... It's a load of hot air.

The only way this has any weight is if the player's camp breached an NDA about the clause.... And if that was the case, we'd have heard that specific criticism from the off.

Depends if it had a NDA. Mind you NDAs aren’t worth the paper they are written on because how do you prove they were disclosed? If I was an agent and you were a Lange type recruiter and I said to you that player X has a release clause of 60 mil, unless that conversation is recorded how can player X’s club prove I told you if we both deny it? It’s stupid.

Spurs fans are all talking about Wharton but I think this is a fantasy (a bit like Eze) rather than grounded in reality.

I think that position is difficult to fill anyway. At the moment we have five players competing for two 8/6 slots…

Bentancur
Bissouma
Gray
Bergvall
MGW if he arrives

Given the size of our squad and registration issues, I don’t see us buying another midfielder without selling. Bentancur was name dropped by Frank, the others are young and recent signings… so Bissouma has to go at a minimum before we buy.

And of course Spurs are not a party to any such agreement and are not bound by its terms. It's the player's side who are alleged to have breached this confidentiality.

And then Forest are bootstrapping that to imply that Spurs being in receipt of that information could not have come any other way than by contact with the player that they didn't approve.

It's supposition that doesn't hold water atop supposition that doesn't hold water.

Hjulmund would go for half or less the cost of either Wharton or Baleba, but of course is unproven in the epl. Still he’s probably the one I’d go for as he looks like he’s built for the epl. Then spend the other money on a LB like Robinson or Esteeve.

Sarr, that's 6!

True but if the player or his rep is proven to have breached the NDA then it possibly voids the release clause, depending on how those parts of the contract are written.
