Meh. There ain’t really a MGW alternative that’s why the saga is so frustrating.

What made MGW special is hes a bull physically, great presser, strong both in the tackle and duels, versatile. El Khannouss is just a more run of the mill central creative player but you can’t play him at 8 with say Bentancur behind him and expect it to actually stand up to more physical midfields. MGW gives you real athleticism, defensive structure, transition orchestration, and the creative element.

A semi reasonable MGW alternative would be ironically Paqueta from Spam.

Lots in fact every other big team- did not want MGW and have and will sign different ( better) players.
He really isn't so special. He is 15th choice midfielder for England for a reason.

I’m not on the Wharton train like that either and I wanted him from Blackburn

I’d rather give Gray half a season of minutes and watch him overtake him
That is straight up delusional. Gray in his actual position looked like a lost dog, chasing shadows. Nowhere near the talent that Wharton is. He'd be perfect, but the club are too cheap to show that sort of ambition, and we'll sign like 3 crap players for the same money, who inevitably end up as more deadwood.

Elite players stay fit and play 38 league games a season.

Elite defenders don't concede 120+ goals over two seasons.

They're good players who can be very good on the odd day, but elite a la Puyol/Maldini/Van Dijk/Lucio? Lol.

Elite players stay fit?

If that’s true then you have a point. I’m pretty sure plenty of elite players have struggled with injuries though

Those 2 didn’t concede 120 goals. Romero was the player in the PL with the biggest on off difference for xG and XG against

Surely CB is covered at this point, pivoting from bidding £60m on MGW to bidding £60m on Zabarnyi makes absolutely no sense whatsoever unless Romero has been attracting interest from an as-yet-unmentioned bidder. I don't rate Dragusin as a starter but him and Danso as cover is surely more than adequate with several talented youngsters in Vuskovic, Dorrington and Phillips also waiting in the wings? If we're going back 5 why the fuck have we just spent £55m on a right winger? Don't see Kudus playing in a 3-5-2 and we don't have the CMs to play 3-4-3, Bentancur might be ok as a sub at a push in a 3-4-3 but literally not one other midfield player we have is suited to it.
