It is but that was my point. Modric when he first came sometimes was in the wrong place, you watched him towards the end with us and he was always in the right place making it hard for the opposition to play through. Carrick had the same thing, at United he massively improved his positioning in front of the backline. I remember have conversations with United fans at the time and they said he improved so much in his time at the club. Wharton isn’t bad defensively but he isn’t elite but he will improve over time but he is already amazing on the ball. He would be a great but very expensive signing IMO. The issue with his defensive positioning Modric and Carrick got better so why not Wharton.
Couldn't agree with you more. Like I posted earlier, Wharton is still just 21, so years away from his prime with a lot of learning and maturing still to do.

My preference is still Anderson, but I'd be made up if we got Wharton instead.

It was £18million but that was huge money then before another big spike in prices in the next couple of years. Read somewhere it was equivalent to £69 million in 2023 terms. It was generally felt to be too much but then they won three titles on the bounce and the CL with him.
Yeah, I pretty much posted the same thing with the 2006 to 2026 equivalent.

I've been banging on about this for a while now that I don't really care what the cost is, as long as it's the right player, whether they cost £5M or £100M.

Hoddle would still be a world beater in this era , in fact he would be even better . Not playing on a muddy field and being hacked to pieces .
Depends on his fitness levels. I think older fans really underestimate just how much fitter and faster premier league footballers are now.
It's also impossible to know how the difference in pitches would actually affect a players ability. Most assume it would make them look better, but there's a very real chance the slower, muddy pitches of the era was making them look better by slowing it all down.

Yep which, comparatively speaking, is what you now should be expecting to pay for any talented Englishman.

If they're what we need then pay it.

I don’t know our budget but if we do actually have a big £150-200m budget I rather get one elite DM and one elite winger than 4 average players. We have enough players , crazy injuries aside we have a lot of depth but lack top quality.

At least the Dro Fernandez to Spurs story ended very quick - as he's now PSG player

Taking to X, Sky Germany’s Plettenberg declared: ‘Understand that Paris Saint-Germain and Dro have already reached an agreement in principle on an immediate transfer. The 18 y/o talented midfielder wants to join PSG and Luis Enrique.’

So in reality if Hoddle had the benefit of superior training , diet and coaching he would be even better
