Simple question. Is this who we want, after all the scouting and analysis is this guy the best on the market for our needs. If so then you have to back yourself and put £70m down and do it.

If we spend £50m on a far less adequate player then we will just have to buy again in 1-2 years. We should know who we want and have done the work and we should push to get the best quality we can rather than buy cheap buy twice which will not make us competitive and end up more costly over the longer term. It only fails if our scouting department is really shit like United.

That’s not the way it works at Spurs. There’s a value based formula included in their wanky spreadsheet calc, and it offsets ‘the best on the market for our needs’

A 8 11 and 3 top priorities
CM who can pass in the 6/8 and a left back (ideally who can play centreback). That would be a great window.

I think we only need a winger NOW if Kudus is out for a while. Otherwise it can wait for the summer. There’s a real obsession about upgrading LW and we do need to do it but the other two positions are MUCH bigger priorities.

Even a 33 year old Xhaka appears as a difference maker for Sunderland; orchestrating the sequences of buildup in a way that none of our current midfielders can.

Call it a deep playmaker, progressive passer or whatever. It's a matter of semantics for the purpose of this discussion. We need at least one, preferably two in the near future.

Wouldn't change fundamentally Frank's overall valuation of longer / direct balls over shorter ones, or his risk averse preference for building through wide areas towards the centre rather than the other way around; but would make a difference still.
