It is the generation of managers raised on Pep and Klopp's cults of personality.

But they ignore the fact that both Pep and Klopp are very pragmatic managers who changed things regularly. Without abandoning their philosophies but still ever changing.

They didn't really, both were pretty stubborn and lived and died by their philosophies, they were never pragmatic.

The difference is that they were backed to the hilt and were just far better managers than Amorim will ever be.

Gooner account but still accurate thread . Frank being very conservative

Being sub optimal after 4 games is to be expected though.

Can’t coach everything in 2 months and some things need to be learned and tweaked after experiencing them against real opponents.

Brighton away will be a MASSIVE test for how much progress the coaches are making. They will have a plan for us like Bournemouth did and they are just as good as them as well.

Having been to the Bournemouth v Brighton game at the weekend, I don’t think Brighton are as good as Bournemouth at all and seemed clueless up top. But they may be a different beast at home (despite my name I don’t actually watch them much!)

I saw them vs City, they look dangerous to me but I didn’t see the Bournemouth game you did so they could just be very inconsistent to start the season

They will be well coached and tactically switched on though

They don’t handle pace too well. Semenyo and Evanilson caused Dunk and their left back (de Cuyper) loads of problems down the side. And not sure how they shaped against City but a 40 year old Milner at 6 means they could be like butter to play through. Baleba didn’t come on until last 15 or so to be fair and when he did they were much better. I imagine they will play him against us to combat the legs of Sarr and Bergvall. Want to see Muani up top if he is fit

That thread is probably fair, but I think Frank is emphasizing defensive solidity above all else before getting more expansive offensively.

This seems entirely reasonable considering where we were at tactically before and also a reflection of the relative weakness of our attacking options before Simons and Kolo Muani arrived and with Maddison, Solanke, and Kulusevski unavailable.

We definitely can’t be this conservative all season and expect to thrive, but as he builds tactical principles into the side and we integrate new signings and players returning from injury it’s fine enough.
100% knew he would want defensive solidity first and foremost which bar the Bournemouth game we are achieving. Sensible like you say after our shambolic non defending of the last two years.
We will get better as the season develops of that I don't have much doubt.
Loving him so far!

So in every single metric so far we're better than we were.
And we have started this season with injuries we didn't have last season.
However, I will caveat that we played Newcastle away and Arse at home in those 4 games last season.
Flip that on its head though, I think Bournemouth were better 2 weeks ago than Newcastle were and we have played and beating City.

Also worth noting Angeball (at Forest) has conceded 3 times as many goals in 1 game than we have in 4 so far this season.

Nah, Ange was being a rude and obnoxious tosser who was also a crap manager.

I want my head coach to win football matches first & foremost, but yeah if he can do it with a bit of class and grace, even better. We're Tottenham Hotspur, not those other London mugs or Liverpool.
TBF, we've won the league TWICE in club history and not for 1 standard Bill Madrid Bill Madrid (BM).

Maybe we ought to just be happy with winning. It looks like its more fun.

“Manchester United will keep my style, insists Amorim, despite heavy derby defeat”

What is it with these managers who cling to one philosophy no matter what? Russell Martin another perfect example, probably the worst manager I’ve ever seen at this level, is obsessed with his system no matter the damage it does.

The best thing about Frank is he’s not chained to one philosophy. You can’t slap a label on his sides and call it ‘Thomas Frank football.

I just think they are actually a bit thick. Footballers have never been the cleverest. That can seep into management too.

I'm really interested to see how he handles these champions league games. He doesnt have any experience in them and neither do the coaching staff particularly. That could be a good and a bad thing. What we have to remember is that if you fall on the floor in those games you get a free kick. We will have to manage the games well.

I'm absolutely done with "philosophical" managers. Give me a practical manager any day of the week, one who organizes his team around the players at his disposal. There are single-digits of managers that have earned the right to prattle on about their "philosophy"; the rest are just kidding themselves.

Why do people insist we 'take the handbrake off' and 'be less conservative'

Seems to me there is this idea that we have to be winning, and have to be doing it in style all the time or else there is something wrong.

I want to win and to enjoy the games too, but not at the risk of losing anymore. We have been there so many times.

I am all for an approach where there is a level of pragmatism and it seems as if, unlike some of our more recent managers who were all up their own arses, we have a manager in Frank that is humble enough to soak in what is happening on the pitch and actually change things - and sometimes starting conservatively allows you to work out the other teams weaknesses

Overall, a positive start, considering the points on the board. Big improvement at the back with our first team defenders and an actual defensive midfielder on the pitch. Makes sense that there would be an improvement.

However, I think we should wait a while longer before playing soggy biscuit here. The Bournemouth match was as much of a farce as anything we saw under Ange and the first half on Saturday was as clueless as a lot of performances last season.

These are mostly the players who let us down so badly last season, so hopefully Frank keeps the progress going, but we may well be in for a downturn at some point.

I'd say a downturn is guaranteed at some point or possibly multiple points of this season. The key will be if Frank minimize those periods 2-3 games at a time.

Forest will relegate with Ange. They might win a league cup or something but its a big sacrifice.

Given that I was gestating when we last lifted the League Title, I would like to object to your calculation of time.

It's bad enough having to deal with the aches and pains of my 63 summers without you adding seven more.

Frank says this about Xavi because that is what he said to persuade him to come to Tottenham. But that does not necessarily mean he will use him like that all the time. Managers are often disingenuous when talking to players so as to obtain them. Xavi said he was very impressed by Frank's presentation and by how Frank saw and thought of utilizing him. In the game yesterday other players didn't treat Xavi as a 10. Spence and others, for example, have refused to make passes to him so as to allow him to create. Frank did not instill that what he told Xavi into other players. And that is a sign of poor management. There is no team cohesion.
