Yup...It feels like I'm constantly getting gas-lit in this stupid Nuno/Frank argument, anyone with a shred of common will tell you the situations aren't alike.

Nuno was fired after 4 months in 9th position about a week after we were dissected by the goons.

Well 5 weeks. We played them September 26th.
Nuno sacked the 1st November. Conte appointed the second.
Fair to say Conte had been contacted in October. Maybe even after the Woolwich game in September?? But took a lot more than a week.

You need a new watch. Or diary. Or maybe just general sense of time!!

Anyway. MW 4-6. We lost 3 games in a row. Conceding 9 and scoring 1. The final one of that run being Woolwich.

Then 2 wins followed by 2 losses in October. Losing 3-0 to United at home being the final straw.

Played 10 lost 5. 4 of them we conceded 3 goals.
So absolutely nothing like this season.

We also lost to Vitesse October 21st. Who are they?? Exactly!
This season. Unbeaten in the CL.

Frank has bought himself plenty of time. With a somewhat depleted squad I should add.

Depleted squad. Oh Jesus. We had 3 long term injuries replaced them all, to the tune of £125m, then got in RKM on loan to replace the other. Now we're having regular injuries for this time of year.

He won't have much time when we're in the bottom half next weekend, and looking up at the table.

Yeah completely agree.

In Nuno's defence, he was pressured to play a style that didn't suit him and the squad he was working with was dog-rough. Especially in hindsight. His first 11 regularly included the likes of Winks, Tanganga and Skipp - all now Championship players - Royal, Hojbjerg, Sanchez, Dier, Reguilon, Ndombele, a broken Alli... Basically all players that would struggle to get on our bench now, let alone the first 11. Not to mention a sulky Kane who only scored a single league goal for him.

People shit on our current squad but the 21-22 squad was SO much worse. Basically 2 world class forwards, Romero and a bunch of bottom half/Championship level players. Conte genuinely worked miracles to get that bunch to 4th.

The 21/22 had less competent players overall but it had two bonafide world class attackers who walked in to any team in not just the league but most teams in the entire world.

Conte had a system. We organised well and then got the ball to two world class footballers. Even Ange got 5th off the back of a still doing well Son hitting good numbers. Two world class attackers is huge.

That and Conte’s system got the best out of Romero, Kulu and Bentancur. The latter one was pre injuries here. I’m not sure our midfield under him was any worse than it is now, Bentancur was better, Kulu more effective than a Simons who can’t adapt physically etc.

The depth was terrible under conte but we had one game a week and a core of Kane, Son, Romero, Lloris, Bentancur and Kulu. The overall squad depth and quality per player now is better but we’ve lost a shit loads of goals and fear factor, frankly.

Conte even had Lucas Moura who, whilst pretty fucking shit, would contribute reliably to 8-10 goals a season in the league which is more than I rely on an Odobert to manage and he was a better footballer than a Johnson.

It’s all well and good having better centre backs, fullbacks and depth now (so do other teams btw - the prem is more loaded than ever) but teams would rather face that than deal with prime Kane and Son.

He had one 10 goal season when he first arrived, but after that he scored 4, 3, 2 and 1 in the league, averaging about 4-5 assists. Can't see Odobert scoring 10 any time soon, but I could certainly see him matching Lucas's other league season output.

While raw, I prefer Odobert as a footballer in general to Lucas who was basically a bit of a brainless dribbler who was would occasionally pull off the spectacular. Odobert has all the technique, just needs the killer instinct and a bit more strength/power. If he can add that to his game he'll be a serious player.

Going back to the broader point I think what it ultimately shows is that, if you have 2 genuinely world class players, especially in forward areas, it can cover for a ton of deficiencies if you build around them. I think 80% of our current squad is better than Nuno's, but the lack of true world class forward quality really hurts us.

We need to either sign a world class attacker soon or we need someone like Odobert or Xavi to make some big steps forward.

In 21/22 he contributed to 8 league goals which isn’t great but will probably be better than Odobert this season. And he was generally good until he had to make decisions. He’d get games for this team.

The Son/Kane/Kulu with Moura as depth front 3 was a lot better than we have now. The issue was if Kane or Son were injured but again, one game a week .. so that’s why we managed fourth.

Behind that a better version of Bentancur and then Hojbjerg was a decent enough platform for ‘lump it to the worldies up top’ plan.

Conte did really fucking well (that backline was a war crime) but basically did show the value of world class attackers & as long as you can organise the rest behind them you can do pretty well.

Conte’s biggest achievement was getting a top class season out of Kulu (prob benefitted from space Kane/Son created) and squeezing the most out of Hojbjerg, Davies & co. They were solid cogs.

Yeah - I think Kulu and Bentancur helped massively tbf. Nuno didn't have those guys and they instantly elevated the level of the team under Conte, although he had to manage until the end of Jan without them.

IIRC there was a 2 week international break between the woolwich game and Nuno being sacked. Yeah I got it wrong though with the matches, there were another 4 league matches before he was sacked.

But he lasted a total of approximately 4 months and was 9th in the league table at sacking time. He was sacked with 10 Premier League matches complete, and had 15 league points, so only 3 points less than Frank and he's had 11 matches.

Regarding injuries, seems that Nuno had injured players too, and some in quarantine due to covid.

And a Kane that didn't show up til Conte came after his failed move to City. Also had a league 1 standard Dele in the team who was absolutely atrocious that season. A defence of Dier/Davies, with Lloris flapping behind him.

Nuno lost 6 of his last 8 games in all competitions. Including one in the Europa conference league.
We regularly lost by 3 goals and never won by more than a single goal. He was a mistake end of.

The fans wanted him gone, the players weren’t performing and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Kane was a part of Conte coming in.

Nuno was just the wrong man at the wrong place at the wrong time. End of.

I think Frank deserves a lot of patience, especially with our injuries and somewhat average squad, but this stat was pretty depressing.

Can't deny that a big part of my love for the sport is a well-delivered pass through the lines - Xavi and Madders would be dining out. Whether Frank adapts his style to be more central remains to be seen, but I'm doubtful
