2 years ago I would have been very concerned with losing him. I don't have that same feeling anymore. The backline needs some major surgery and some hard decisions need to be made. If he doesn't have the stomach for the rebuild, he's not the senior centerback we need as a role model for Rodon, Tanganga, et al.

If you want to pretend that everything was rosy with Toby then go ahead, but he clearly had a falling-out with Poch when he dropped him for Davinson way back when. To the extent that he refused to sign a contract and we were ready to sell him.

He was Mourinho’s most trusted defender and then towards the end he was dropped for Sanchez/Rodon/Dier for weeks on end, even being left in the stands for some matches. I think he’s one of the players who has been here for too long despite his level fading badly. Of the old guard, only Lloris, Kane and Son have maintained a high standard of play.

I think he’s been a great servant to the club and he’s still our best defender, but he’s on the decline so I’ve no issue with him going. I’ll miss him, but I’m not sure how much playing time he’s got left in him.
I think it leaves us in an awful position defensively though because who we’ve got left are not good enough and I suspect any summer purchases will be bargain bin players, but it’s a big chunk of wages that can be freed up.

I don't mind him leaving but i have so little faith in our recruitment i can't see where we get a better option in this market.

Unless Paritici is able to pull a few rabbits out of the hat, the signings we've made in the last 4 years do not suggest we will be replacing Toby with a player of greater quality. The evidence points to the opposite occurring.

So I've now read the quotes, they read more like Toby wants to be in Belgium by 2023 (which is when his contract runs out). Leaving on a free, like Jan, would make him more affordable to the likes of Belgian/Dutch teams. At 34 he would be more realistic as to his wage demands I'd imagine.

And before anyone goes mad, he probably means friends who are girls or boys. Toby has always been highly family orientated in public. Growing up in Belgium near their families and friends sounds important to him.

p.s. sorry for the crap formatting

Potentially playing 3 at the back, needing players who can pass well, I hope he sticks around. We're not going to sell him for anything significant. He's worth more to us for another year.
