Competition Top 4 - struggling to care?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

We ain’t winning no trophies with some of dross we have to put on the pitch absolute garbage ,we are million miles away from winning a trophy and we’re about to bottle fourth when it’s there in front of us with lack lustre performances you would think we’ve got nothing to play for the way play sometimes .

Not sure about the dross.

I think my comment, now thst I have soothed from the disappointment of last night is how we just seem to be incapable of building momentum.

I want more than anything to see consistently high performance, to think we have players who on their day are just too good. We don't have that and haven't since Bale and then Alli.

Players who simply arrive when you need them. Who are so mercurial that you can win Cup competitions.

We need a midfielder who dominates, and a striker.. Bare minimum.

But most of all we need a mindset and a maverick.

Hope we get CL football as I can’t deal with all the whiny bitches moaning about Thursday to Sunday football and I’d rather watch us play the likes of Real Madrid than Real Sociedad.

The flip side of Europa league is cheaper tickets and more chance for kids to go to matches against the lesser teams.

Ultimately we play where we belong. 2019 CL knockout stages remains one of the best Spurs footballing experiences of my life.

Not just the champions league but modern football in general. Just built around making money these days.

Anyway, of course I want spurs in it as it means we are doing well but given the choice I would rather have fa cups or league cups than our fourth place trophy.

Back to my first point, our club is run by accountants so we know where the priorities are.

I always want Spurs to do well and win every game. But I genuinely detest modern football and everything associated with it.

In a nutshell, if we get in the CL I hope we do as well as possible, if we don't get in, I really don't care.

Let's win a League Cup or FA Cup (or both) before we start fretting too much over the CL.

I would be very content to be in the Europa next season as I think we have the ability to win it. The two things that come with the CL are additional money in the kitty which I’d like to see go toward player recruitment and the draw of the CL which a lot of the top players are after. So in summary, being in the CL has the capacity to make us a better team so I do very much care about qualifying.

The problem is i dont think it matters if we're in it or not in terms of going up a level player wise. We've never pushed on once we've qualified for it. There just seems little or no desire to use it as a platform to go that extra yard to properly challenge for the title.

Whether we finish 4th, 5th or 6th who can honestly say they see anything other than another fight for top 4 this time next season? I still hope we get 4th but its been groundhog day for the best part of 20 years now since Jols first full season in 05/06 give or take the odd special or crap season.

This.

I’d like it to actually mean something. We get CL the club looks to bring in Isak/top striker, top winger and decent CM and we set up for competing for the title/CL next season. It has to have a meaning, a reason behind it.

If it’s just to make up the numbers I’d rather be in the EL and try and win that.

I want us to finish as high as possible in the league every season. But I will never turn my nose up at competing in the EL or the Conference for that matter.

Being in Europe should always be viewed as important. The EL has also become a much better competition in recent years.

The conference is shite, agree on the EL - think it will generate decent revenue next season too and be a better comp for not having CL drops

The good thing is that with all these posters not bothered about top 4 it will mean match threads should be a nicer place for the rest of the season. Not bothered about winning so no need to melt.

Should also give Kulu a bit of respite too!

(I can't explain why but this thread and some responses have proper triggered me!)

Not just modern football..modern fans??
It was always going to be a season of transition..im.amazed we are where we are considering we played the first half of the season with a reserve team more or less.
Jesus h ?

I want the club to focus on winning trophies. 4th is all we have to play for this season but for me as a fan beyond this season trophies have to be a priority if we want to be considered a top club. Not coming 4th. If you offered me an fa Cup final and the chance of winning it or guaranteed 4th place I'd take the chance in the final. That's what football is about to me. That's what it used to be about to this club. 1991 was the last time this club won something that is a step up from the league cup.
It's mathematically possible for us to win the league, actually.

My son and nephew and their generation love those big European nights. Madrid, Munich Barca etc etc. what a great experience- which I never got in my teens / twenties.
And they would have enjoyed going to conference matches this year too just to be out and having a laugh.
And I used to enjoy the banter with teams from the middle of fucking nowhere. Good times under Jol.

We are just a bunch of jaded old men on here.
Seen it all before.

The end of the ride is closer than the start for a lot of us.
Sad but true.

We can win the Champions League with Ange. We need to qualify
It's difficult, and usually only very very good teams win it but.....it's still only a handful of games. Throw in a bit of luck and you never know. Much easier to win for us than the PL.

As such, yes I care about qualifying for CL. Not a disaster if we don't but we need to be up there. In some respects football is a numbers game. Just be there, in and around the top and it'll happen.

Look at next season, Klopp gone, City probably at the end of an era (also no surprise if Haaland goes to Bernabeu), ManU and Chelsea all over the place.....we should be right in the mix next season, providing we have a decent summer window. And what will very much help that window is having Champions League football at the Lane.

I know it's a well trodden argument, but it's true. We should always want to finish as high as possible, compete as much as possible.

It's because we all know the owners won't use CL qualification as a springboard to kick on and compete for major honours. They'll use it as a springboard to bolster the spreadsheet and increase our annual profit.

Anyone who claims otherwise is either completely deluded or simply lying to themselves
I agree.

We would all love it if CL qualification meant a world class defender, midfielder and striker.

But we know that isn’t how this football club is run.

We might get players who are 5% better than our mean/median* players, though.

* whichever is cheaper to achieve.

Some interesting responses here, cheers for getting involved all. Seems to be a bit of a split in the group.

I guess that reflecting on it, it just seems to me this season's race doesn't have the spark, tension and interest that previous ones have had. I remember bawling my eyes out as a kid when Woolwich beat us to 4th place in the lasagne-gate season, while the Crouch winner against City is one of the most mental I've ever gone for a goal.

Compare that to now. I was at the Luton game on Saturday and didn't feel anywhere near like the same level of nervousness, and that was the same last night. Perhaps, as some have pointed out, it's just the fact we have different expectations now/are jaded and even blasé about being in the Champions League. The only game I'm proper still buzzing for between now and the end of the season is Woolwich, and that's only to hopefully dent their title hopes.

I care about the CL and find it a bit strange that many fans don't buy each to their own, I mean if offered the choice why wouldn't you take CL football? Even if we get k.o early doors it's still good experience for the group, every game is a learning curve.

That’s it right there.

I can remember watching crouch score and going mad in my living room.
I will always remember those CL nights where we defied whatever and had fate / luck on our side.

But now?? Tickets cost more. We still haven’t won anything.
You can feel the “what’s it all for?” attitude that is out there.
And invariably the answer is “Money”

And I’d rather be us than Leicester over the last 25 years. However I know there’s others that would rather be Leicester right now given that choice.
Just enjoy the ride however you want to.

C’est la vie!! Bonnet de douche Garcon!!
