To young to remember the 2nd division, but would have loved it!
Remember being on a train coming back from Birmingham a few years back and SS was sat there with a big lump on his head where he had been hit with a bottle, looked like he didn’t have a care in the world!
I was only a kid mate, of 9/10,but it was a brilliant time.Certainly wasn't the walk in the park that many were predicting pre season.I remember the last home game v Hull and we had to win it to be withinn a chance.We did,what an atmosphere that was.Only done one away(as i was a kid and going with my Dad) which was Orient.
So glad i witnessed that season.
Can just imagine the atmospheres against all the Northern teams, us being the flash cockney bastards, superb lol
Steve Perryman scored that night late on and it was a foul on the keeper really but no ref would have dared disallowed it due to the crowd. We only lost one at home in the league that year and that was Sunderland. Our crowds were up from the average in the relegation season proving our loyalty and our 33,417 was bettered by only 6 in the top division. The C word had 28,000 and Spam 25,000 that year in the first division incidentally.
I remember the atmosphere on WHL station after the game being electric.You can't buy that
Yes even at Liverpool Street it was mental, the rainbow bar (had a different meaning then) and the apples and pears on the station were heaving masses of Spurs fans ready to board trains to Tottenham. Great days indeed.

I remember Queen released "We are the Champions" fairly early in the season and everyone joining in on the shelf (or so it seemed)whenever it was played pre match.
A mate bought a copy from the newsagents opposite the Paxton Road in the early 80's as he done 41 of 42 and used to go on the KR coaches.
He lent me it to me many years later and a nice lady at work copied it for me.
I have got to know a few in photo's especially the Paddington (Fulham away pictures) and a lot of them still go.
Unfortunately some have gone to the big ground in the sky.
I didn't get to any away games that season but done six at home including Bristol Rovers.Does anyone remember the cake shop(Bakers) at the corner of Park Lane and Worcester Avenue?
Cup of Tea and a sausage roll then see if I was first in the queue at the school boys entrance to get my position just to the right of the TV Gantry at the front of the Shelf.Happy Days the best view in football.

Was ordinarily in the Olive Branch and colt 45 was the order of the day as opposed to a sausage roll but i vaguely remember a shop like that. Queues formed at the lane at noon in those days as everyone wanted to get in and secure a good spot. I remember one time we played Swindon in the FA cup replay in 1980 (after Spurs fans set fire to the programme hut at the county ground the previous Saturday) and the queue was enormous. I very nearly didn't get in but just managed to before kick off. Was no room on the lower shelf and the upper part was rammed too. I forced my way up to the very back by the Paxton to see Gerry Armstrong score 2 late goals to send us through. 46,000 i think it was.
Our lot went to Burnley on the train. A short distance outside my mate had his head out of the window but pulled it in to say something to us and about a second or two later a small rock came though the gap and richocheted around the carriage. He was probably about 2 seconds away from serious injury. Or worse.
Spurs always went in the Boothen end at Stoke and there was always a huge round of applause as they were led around the pitch back to the away end after their exploits. One memory that sticks from Stoke (think it was the 1975 FA cup) when the 'firm' were joining the away end i thought they were singing 'we're the bummy Tottenham army' (stay with me) but it was Northern Spurs and of course it was barmy Tottenham army. Silly what you remember really. That replay was played on a Saturday because their stand blew down midweek.We went up to Newcastle in the semi final of the league cup that week too (lost both games) and at the following home game you were considered disloyal if you hadn't been to both!
That was like Derby away where about 20 Spurs stood our ground right in the middle of the home end until numbers were overwhelmingly against us and we got backed into a corner and given a police escort out. We got a huge round of applause from the Spurs in the away end as we were led in there.
I'm appalled....I am associating here with a bunch of hooligans....
I was only 11 so no colt 45 for me but to this day Swindon is my favourite ever game at WHL the noise was unreal
Sean, back then you didn't have to be a hooligan or go looking for 'bovver'.... it came looking for you. sometimes at WHL and almost always when travelling away, you'd have to run the gauntlet getting to and from the ground and then quite likely have to fend off local hoolies either infiltrating the away end or lobbing all kinds of shit at you. I could tell you loads of stories from away trips back in the day and I wasn't part of any 'mob'.
