Match Tottenham Hotspur v Ajax, Champions League Semi-Final, Tue 30th April

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I ended up watching full match highlights of them on a video I found on YouTube last night, just to run my eye over them. A few pointers to watch out for?

Excellent one touch understanding of who to play it to, where to move to and run off of to receive the ball back. We need to either commit to the tackle and press defensively or sit off of them and win the foot race with the 2nd ball when they have possession. They understand each other's games impressively for a young team. Most of their attack does seem to be in relatively wider positions and it seems to suit being played against a team with a high line defensively.

Secondly when the opposition (I watched Ajax vs Standard Liege 2nd leg FYI) has possession and is trying to build out from the back they press remarkably well but commit risk due to this. We need to be sharp knowing we can't dwell on the ball. After watching the game I think the key player for us is Sissoko. If we can get past that initial wave of them swarming the ball and the anticipated next pass they see, to leave gaps. The only issue then however is what we do with that advantage.

It's worth noting that the 1st leg vs Standard Liege was 2-2 so they can be loose in their defensive duties due to their aggressive behaviours. They very much remind of of the first Poch era where we pressed the life out of teams at WHL. The difference is we had a brute ball carrier whereas they have De Jong.

Sissoko being fit is key for me. Defensively get Wanyama sticking to De Jong like glue and get Sissoko helping out our defense for any late runs from deep. With the ball his transitional play will be key. This can't be a ding dong battle as we have limited firepower so anyone going can't expect a slugfest. It will be a fascinating game where we really have to respect what they are capable of. A professional display more important than a stellar one is how I saw it when identifying areas in their patterns last night.

Keep tight to them but have a spare man protecting should they win that first ball and run off of us. This to me is the key with no Kane & Son and with Dele seemingly struggling to be the man we know he can be in a Tottenham shirt. A clean sheet is as big as a goal or two and should be treated as such.

We're borderline fucked without Winks in this one though.

Our midfield play is far too slow without him and no one seems to know how to actually control a game. Which is surprising even when Eriksen plays deep.

Sissoko being fit would be key. Whilst he doesn't know the meaning of control nor is he particularly quick with the ball at his feet in the same way Winks recycles and keeps possession, he gives us something different in that he can get up and down the field and take the ball from defence to attack in an instant.

It also means we can play Dele further forward and go with:

Lloris
Trippier - Alderweireld - Sanchez - Vertonghen - Rose
Sissoko - Wanyama - Eriksen
Lucas - Dele
Big weakness in Ajax's game is their defence. I watched them against Vitesse and they were dreadful in picking up players. That is where Dele could really be useful.

Even if we go 4 at the back, wouldn't be against bringing Llorente in and having Dele play really close to him to hopefully feed off of some knock downs or flick ons.

Agreed regarding the formation and line up if Winks isn't fit. We simply cannnot play Llorente against this lot, it will be like having ten men unless we insist he plays back to goal and lays it off to the likes of Eriksen, Dele or Lucas. For me that's too big a risk as it will encourage long balls that will get sniffed out more often than not and give them possession which we don't want. Llorente can't press so we can't even threaten putting them under the cosh that way. Llorente up top we run the risk of chasing shadows, whereas with 3 at the back we can use 2 of our CBs to press/ man mark and use the other as a floater to tidy up whenever their man does get away from them. I'm not a huge fan of 3 at the back but with the importance of a clean sheet being the biggest asset I think we can hope for with our available attacking players being very hot & cold I'd go with your choice and hope sniper Dele remembers who he is and what he can do at a time where the whole world will be watching.

Lucas for me is little more than respite release to move the ball up field, our success comes from late runs and crosses with our personnel unfortunately. Tight at the back, high man Mark press and keep it tight to them with Davinson acting as a free man to buffer any slip ups our defenders or DM have in losing their man.

If winks is out even Sissoko at 90% must start. Whether it be with Wanyama or dier. The amount of ground he covers and his genealogy work rate and dynamism will be so important.

Ajax are a youthful energetic team that move the ball well.

Fuck me im nervous. I’m greedy now, I know I should be satisfied with a semi final but now the final is surging reach I want it badly!

I really think Ajax will come flying out of the traps at us. I don't think they're going to be cagey at all.

They know how decimated we are and will definitely be going for the away goal and even try and put us out of sight before we get some of the team back for the second leg.

I just pray we don't do our usual thing and go into our shell at what I think could be a first 15 minutes onslaught.

I just want to still be in the tie going into the 2nd leg.

It's one of the great mysteries to me how poor Eriksen looks when he's asked to play a deeper role in midfield, he honestly looks like a different player. So sloppy on the ball and his passing is all over place. It's so strange.
I would honestly fear for Wanyama in this game, especially if as anticipated he'll be tasked with tracking de Jong. He really could be turned inside out.

It seems we are holding off on letting Parrott take part in an u17s tournament for Ireland starting this Friday. Not sure if it's worth looking into but the quotes seem to suggest Troy is in our thoughts as we hit a key part of our season:

They've got nothing to lose

Beat us? Historic achievement. A Champions League final.

Lose to us? Great achievement getting to a semi final on their budget

They will keep coming at us tomorrow. We just need to aim to stifle them. A win would be great for us but a cleansheet is ALOT more important.

Luckily for us, we seem to actually be set up rather well in Europe. (City away aside), no idea why. Madrid, Dortmund (four times), Inter over the last few years has seen us put in some brilliant defensive performances.

Would take a 0-0 in all honesty.

0 0 would be brilliant....... Watching the Real and Juve games, Ajax did most of their damage away from home when their opponents tried to come at them... They were able to outwork them and were most dangerous down the sides...... I can see left back and rightback getting a real examination tomorrow.

With that in mind KWP or Trippier and Davies or Rose (Or even Verts with Sanchez, Toby and Foyth as CB) The key is who's going to be most likely to be able to cope with their width? Trippier versus Sterling was a total nightmare. KWP did a job in Barcelona.

Also Dier or Wanyama or both?

Despite our range of injuries there are still some pretty significant choices to be made.

0 0 and then get some key players back. There is no shame in shutting up shop and trying to frustrate Ajax.

Good spot.

I'd have thought its more likely that we'd use Parrott in the Bournemouth game (probably to be on bench) than the Ajax match - plus I'm not sure he been at Spurs long enough to qualify as an u21 for CL rules
