Tottenham takeover by AEG

Btw, if it's a case of if you can't beat them, join them - which It is becoming, then I'd sooner see us do what's required than be left behind. And AEG as opposed to a multi-billionaires toy would be acceptable to me. Shame it's come to this though...
If it's a case of "if you can't beat them," I'd rather Spurs get relegated out of principle. The day Spurs start running 200 million pound annual deficits is the day I stop supporting them. Seems to me that the fuckers who engineered this massive global economic stagnation learned nothing from the process and moved into the footballing world. I get so fucking frustrated when people act as though basic economic principles don't apply to sports teams. One day there's going to be a reckoning, and the Chelseas, Citehs of the world are going to reap what they've sown for the past decade, and Spurs are going to keep marching on.

That shit is unsustainable, it's a short sighted move for trophies that leaves the club in dire straits later on. Wouldn't be surprised if one of either Chelsea or Citeh don't exist in another 15 years time. Let them do their thing, Spurs have struck a great balance, and are one of the most profitable teams in the league. It's difficult to get good talent that will move to Spurs when Citeh and Chelsea would pay them triple the wages, but it can be done, and the club is better off for it than if they were to start employing people to flush millions down the drain as Chelsea and Citeh have.

edit: Don't have much of an opinion on AEG. Don't know much about them, really. ENIC have been great caretakers for the club and it would scare me a little bit to see them leave. I'm not against the club being sold because that's just the nature of the game, ENIC has every right to cash out whenever they want. It would just scare the hell out of me because of the likelihood that some oil-rich oligarch or Middle Eastern royal would move in and set up shop for little more than an ego play. If AEG was to buy out the club and leave Levy as Chairman I'd say that would be pretty hard to complain about and that would be an easy transition with a consistent vision for the club. Naming rights don't really bother me either because knowing the club the stadium would still be plastered with WHL memorabilia and shit, and knowing the fans they'd probably say fuck it and call it the Lane anyways.

It will always be the Lane.

Agree with your sentiments also. Considering how we've just stuck at a particular business model/ethos would taint everything if we suddenly sold out in the wrong type of way and attempted a short cut.

All the pro-Stratford lot were willing for that sacrifice to happen. Funny how they've stopped piping up about that now.

I'm all for something like "[insert sponsor here] Stadium at White Hart Lane." But that gets to be a mouthful, and it might be difficult to work in seeing as a sponsor might think that dilutes their branding. At any rate, I think it's difficult to turn down a lucrative stadium sponsorship considering how that money could be used to pay down debt accrued from building the new stadium.

I rather like your idea but as you correctly point out, the sponsor would probably not go along with it.

AEG will surely want to have other events at the stadium during the summer break. Holding concerts etc isn't great, but if it means that the new stadium gets paid for and brings more revenue in to the club then it is something I can put up with.

For how many years of our history have we had that model?......maybe 5-10%....

Thats the sad thing about getting a new stadium is they're gonna change the name :(

How many league titles would make a name change ok?

1 would do for me

Im not saying i don't want a new stadium because I think we need one sooner or later, if we want to get better as a club. I just think its going to be really weird not calling it White Hart Lane anymore.

VirginiaSpur - not a world away from my own thoughts

if we were bought out by a sheik mansour type id probably stop going and support any protest against them or a splinter club being formed etc - id keep my season ticket and fleece any newbie glory hunter that wants to pay me extortionate prices for my seat in the hope that one day they'd fuck off and a proper football club would return. id still look out for the results but would have no interest in aiding a 'business model' which is contributing to the demise of the sport i love.

as for AEG - i have no idea how they would go about running us as a club - i have fears that an Entertainment Company would not have the supporters best interest at heart and would slowly destroy everything i hold dear about the club - but on the other hand i could be completely wrong. but im sceptical to say the least

This was discussed with Levy last year and his response suggested it was a real possibility in my opinion. Obviously he didn't say yes and from memory he actively discouraged any possibility of ENIC and Lewis selling the club but as far as normal procedures for an investment company it would be about the right time to sell and make money. That's why they bought the club and that's what investment companies do after all. With the apparent final details coming together on the NDP and the team in good shape would there be a better time for an investment company to jump ship? I doubt it very much.

With regards to AEG being the company I think I'd prefer that to an individual buying it. They'll do their best to run it properly and make money which in football is usually done by performances on the pitch (as well as all the merchandising crap) but AEG are big enough to give us the extra exposure we would need to start looking at cracking the worldwide market which is where we need to be.

If Levy were to remain in charge that would be an added bonus but personally I'm not sure about that part of the deal. Unless he's grown accustomed to life in the football world and changed his mind on what was his original goal of taking control of ENIC I'd be surprised if that part was true, but would be happy if it were.

Hmm, not sure what to make of it. Only has 4.4billion (As ridiculous as it sounds), which i don't think is that much money, just depends on whether or not he would be willing to cough up. Levy has to remain though, thats for sure.

Well, 4.4billion is about 3x more than Joe Lewis' estimated 1.6billion net worth . . .

I've long been against Billionaire foreign owners coming in & throwing their cash around because they want a Premier League play thing.

However, I'm thinking it's actually more about it just being theright owner, rather than simply being British.

This guy certainly loves his football to have had such a vested interest in the MLS for so long - if he weren't genuinely interested in football he would never have stuck it out so long.

Also, he is a very astute businessman and wouldn't treat the club as a toy. AEG is notorious at making project self-sustainable and, to be honest, it can only be a good thing with our new stadium on the horizon.

Something like this is inevitable at some point, so as long as it isn't just the highest bidder but someone who genuinely wants the best for the club, then I'm OK about it to be honest.

I doubt we'd see much change on the surface. Joe Lewis, as it is, has kept a very low profile anyway (& altho a lifelong Spurs fan from East London, he now lives Stateside himself anyway) & I'm loving the fact that Anschutz would keep Levy where he is - Levy's role is the everyday running of the club and is, probably, the absolute best chairman in the Premier League right now. We can't go far wrong with him at the helm and he won't suddenly steer us into troubled waters simply because a new owner is in town!

I also like the fact that Anschutz is a close friend of Lewis's and this sale is something they've discussed over a long period. It shows this isn't something being done on a whim & that Lewis won't just sell to anyone - Let's be honest, our stock has never been higher and if Lewis really wanted a quick sell, I'm sure some there are plenty Chinese/American/Russian/Arabic uber-billion-trillionaires out there he could auction us off too but, instead, even his "close friend" is having to negotiate a sale

So long as we stay in Tottenham, so long as Levy is in charge and if it facilitates our move into our shiny new White Hart Lane and maybe aids our acquisitions of top players without going crazy with transfer fees and our wage structure (particularly the wage structure as that is what has the potential to cripple a club should a mega-rich playboy suddenly lose interest) then I don't have a problem at all.

There are far worse people to be associated with than AEG
