Has winks done something to his hair?

The back four are organised because the whole team is organised (they are also organised in their own right too).

It really helps when you have the forwards press the opposition, something they NEVER did under the dinosaur. I'm almost bored of saying it but under the dino, our defence was under siege almost every game, that's unsustainable. He had us set up to defend with our backs to the wall, reactive and passive.

Nuno yesterday still had us conceded possession, but it was anything but reactive, it was assertive, aggressive, pro-active football. Disrupting City's build-up, forcing them wide, most importantly not having them play through the middle of the park, making them play slower by blocking passing lanes where they would usually pass into.

City play with narrow full-backs during their buildup. Our front 3 closed down Fernandinho when their CBs had the ball, then Dele and Skipp closed the angle for central passes from the narrow full-backs.

This is so, so different that sitting camped on the edge of your own box and lumping it up to Kane or Son. Which, our ability to counter City wasn't about lumping it, the build-up was from deep and we attempted it numerous times, it meant City had to drop men deeper to cover this which also inturn blunted their own attacking options.

Whilst Tanganga was exceptional against Grealish & Sterling who doubled up on him , one man who's been completely transformed so far under Nuno (yeah that's a bit dramatic to say that) and hasn't been mentioned is Reggie. I love watching Reggie play as he's good fun, but he's been all over the shop in all aspects of his game the past few months, he resembles a dog with a beach ball. But throughout the pre-season and in this game he was aggressive whilst remaining in full control, he wasn't doubled up on but still won his 1v1's on the other side of the pitch.

Sorry for the waffle but I really liked what I saw from us today defensively and I'm still buzzing following the utter shite from Jose. Fingers crossed there's more to come.
Our front 6 pressed like monsters and it showed. Back 4 still had work to do but only have up 3 good chances, one of which was off a set play.

Pressing also led to a lot more opportunities - 13 shots isn't great but its pretty good given the lack of possession.

Just reading back through this thread. The melting when people saw the lineup is hilarious. First game of the season and people already preferring to slag off players and management before either have been given a chance. Fans? Supporters? Giraffe. Thank God the people inside the stadium were behind the team. Hope some humble pie is on the menu this morning. If you’re just after big names on the team sheet and in the dugout, feel free to bugger off to the team we beat yesterday. They’re a club of plastic melts. Many on here would fit in well.

No one in yesterdays match thread saw that performance coming including you.

Playing Captain Hindsight is easy.

Put it this way had we lost, you would have posted something like "I told you so".

Prick.

Dele apparently covered more ground than any other player (11.11 km) and clocked the highest average speed (6.9 km/hr) yesterday according to OptaJoe.

As someone who has been critical of his play over the last two seasons I can happily say bloody well done. He was great, particularly in the second half where he refused to let Gündogan out of his sight.

He put in a couple of tackles yesterday that Graham Roberts would have been proud of.

You’re a lovely one, hey?

Of course the performance and result were something of a nice surprise. That doesn’t mean you have to have a massive melt and slag off players and management before a ball has been kicked. Fortunately the ground was filled with positive fans proud to back the club and give Nuno and the boys their support. But crack on with the keyboard warrior negativity of that floats your boat.

agreed preacher. Legacy Lilywhite Legacy Lilywhite , do shut up mate!!! Just enjoy the win like the rest of us are. I don’t think there is anyone that thought a defensive unit of Sanchez and Dier was going to be so dominant, when we have seen some turgid performances from them the last few years, so what do you expect ?

I’m pretty certain you didn’t, so get off your bloody high horse. We are not going to blindly be optimistic when let’s be honest, it’s been a bloody horrendous 2 years supporting this club. Nobody expected yesterday’s performance.

It was a breath of fresh air. Stop being such a knob head thinking your this great supporter because you wasn’t critical. We are all in the same boat here. Enjoy it.
