Coefficient points are awarded for wins/draws in group stage and progress.

So in Europa League if you win most/all the group games and win the tournament you get a lot of points. I'm guessing Chelsea won all the group games and the group was easy.

Most of the CL group teams are higher quality than EL so it's harder to get high points.

Thems the rules - personally think EL should get less points for wins etc than CL purely because CL is more difficult.
The only difference in CL is 4 bonus points for being in the groups, and another 4 bonus points in R16.
But EL has the additional round which leaves another chance to grab points for winning both legs.

So the number of points from competing in EL and CL are broadly similar.

In EL the competing clubs can be of a lower quality which means that for ManU or Woolwich (next seasons EL clubs) chances are its easier to win points in the matches they play albeit there is the hassle of the extra round.

So pretty likely that ManU or Woolwich next season will gain as many points, or even more than the clubs competing in CL (as happened this season with Chelsea gaining more points competing in EL).

And I repeat. It's fucking bullshit.

Maybe it's UEFA's attempt at getting teams to not treat the competition as a reserve league.

Absolutely agree.

But still funny (in an odd sort of way) how UEFA does things that really don't bear scrutiny for being sensible by any rational person

We should be able to move up the co efficient table with a decent season in CL next season. A lot of the teams above us are going to to lose their points from 5 seasons ago. We only have 9 to lose from that season.

People decry those points from the Europa League as easy. But the whole reason we subjected ourselves to tough draws in the CL is because we didn't pick up many points from the Europa - we'd normally not even win the group. Chelsea played strong sides the whole way through and got their reward.

Until Uefa change those bizarre pot 1 seedings, it will not matter one bit. We cannot go higher than pot 2, unless we win the PL or CL.

Harry wasnt interested in EL when we are playing in it - and the revenue from it was pitiful at the time.

Had we been paid same money for our EL games as is paid now Levy would have insisted Harry take it more serioudly

Also, the very year we didn't play in it was the very year they made winning it an entry into the CL, that's a €100m incentive right there. It could be argued that with only 15 games to play (against only 8 different sides) that a club now might want to put all it's eggs in this basket as it's easier than playing 38 games against 19 other opponents in the PL.

Very true but at least we could be regular pot 2 by moving up a few places. The Europa is changing shortly, think it’s season after next. Taking 16 of the lower ranked teams out leaving EL with same number of games as CL , Apparently League Cup winners will qualify for EL 2 which will make it less popular with bigger clubs. Prize for winning EL 2 is qualification for the EL following season. Fantastic!,
If Wolves have a real go at the EL next season they could possibly win it and end up in Pot 1 of the CL.
POT 1 or Pot 2...does it really matter. Some very good teams in Pot 2.
