Performance Unpopular opinion 3 games in

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I look back at the early games last season and we were getting results we didn’t deserve. Winning games we shouldn’t have. The opposite is true this season.

Our play is showing positive signs and we need to stick to the plan.

I actually think we are showing considerably more promise against the low block than last year. We are getting the ball into dangerous places. Just not finishing. Johnson’s great touch to free himself in the box followed by the rushed shot for example. Or the several times we had great crosses in and the opposite winger and striker neither took up the right spots or simply missed. (Odabert trying w his knee versus a low header!)

So to me, big improvement in how we are playing v the low block. Just need the last piece to click.

Btw, after defending Brennan for a while, I joined the criticism train on him because he was awful in preseason and our first 2 games. Mostly imo because he was playing tentative. But yesterday showed what he can be - a bright and threatening option. Hope it continues.

He just needs to be confident and play without fear.

I think what it all boils down to is the improvements we're seeing at the moment are more like Blu-Ray to 4k UHD than VHS to DVD. There are subtle nuances that are perceptible to the more discerning viewer but virtually meaningless to the average punter.

Unpopular opinion? On here?

- We're ridiculously unlucky to be on 9 points this season and have been the far better team in each of the three games.

- The underlying statistics tell us we are unlucky with the results and it's much more telling and better for our future that we're dominating but not quite getting the results than playing poorly and scraping wins. Because eventually it will actually click.

Hate to brake it to you, but only stat that matters is goals scored vs goals conceded.

Calling things like "touches in opposition box" or "possession" as "underlying stat" is absolutely pointless.

We have to improve the pace at which we move the ball and create spaces. That gives more time and room for our attackers which in turn increases the chances conversion rate. Different ways to achieve it, I am just hoping that Ange is looking for most efficient solution for that. Instead of feeling "we already were better team" and "deserved more". Wins have to be killed off, not just waited patiently.

Agree with the op. Results haven't quite been there, but there's been significant improvement in most performance metrics and the results will come if we continue in the vein that we've started the season.

It's like that old cliche of the striker just needing one to go in off their arse, it'll come and we'll be in a good place.

Did you honestly *enjoy* watching us, the spectacle of our football under the early tenures of Mourinho and Conte?

I watched out of a sense of duty because I'm a Spurs fan. I rarely enjoyed the experience. And we were top of the league.
Yeah. Like I said. I enjoy watching us win. I hate watching us lose.
I enjoyed watching us beat the scum 3-0 with Conte far more than losing the 3-2 *thriller* last season.

People were adamant when Ange came that they didn't care if we lost, they would be happier if it was good football.

I guess if the trend continues, we'll put them to the test.
Most of us knew that was complete bollox. Contes first 7 months were nothing short of sensational, we won game after game in the league, caught the bottle job Gooners to finish 4th and were absolutely dusting teams in the process.

Spanked Villa/Newcastle/Leeds/Everton and Woolwich like they were nothing.

Went to Norwich on the final day needing a result - all the bottle job spurs jokes and jibes. Blew the canaries to pieces, 5-0 and didn’t hear a peep from those faaacks all summer.

Lasted up until about October the following year - it was that 4-3 win over Leeds that seemed to break people and down hill from there. I remember people moaning after we had beaten Palace 4-0 away in early Jan and knew that night it was a matter of time.

We’re more attacking under Ange but he has not done anything close to that first part season Conte had yet.

Under Jose we were dog shit every single game, even his two big wins at Man U away and Southampton away had a high degree of luck to them and we absolutely didn't control either of the games.

Under Conte I thought we were bloody excellent post-Burnley game all the way to the end of the season (in his first season) but were absolutely shit for the entirety of his 2nd season.

Ange ball is vastly more entertaining than much of what we've had to watch this past half a decade. I still don't think we're winning the league with him but I reckon we can nab a trophy in style if our players can pull their heads out of their arses.

The fans weren't the first to "break".......... Once he'd fully got his claws into the players with his full pre-season we were not remotely the same team.

His first 6 months we were excellent.

I think we’re too easy to play against.

ā€œSit back, congest the box and wait for them to fuck upā€ is pretty much what every team outside of the top 4 is going to be told.

Yes some of the football we’re playing is great to watch but our forwards are struggling to breakdown the low block and the way we play will always make us vulnerable on the counter. If our forwards become more clinical in front of goal then those defensive frailties wouldn’t matter as much.
We're not really struggling to break down the low block as much as we did last year. We're much better at it, as can be evidenced by our xG across these first 3 games where we played teams that literally camped in their penalty box. Just rewatch the games.

Yep, he will live and die on the cups and Europe for me - look like he gives a fuck about them and tries to win them and I will be happy.

Despite early season meh results, we should be good enough for euro qualification from here

I really hope Ange gets us over the top in the league, but even if he doesn't he will have laid a very strong foundation for whomever follows him.
