Here is the bit where I am obliged to say that there were already Jews in the Middle East before modern Zionism.

There has been a Jewish presence in the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia for thousands of years. The assumption that we all came out of Russia/Poland/Germany, and that Israel is just another case of white people killing brown people, is inaccurate. What is today Syria, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen - all had sizeable native-born Jewish populations prior to 1948. Even in Iraq there were were 120,000 Jews in the 1940s. (After mass expulsions and emigration, there are very few left in those countries, so people tend to think Jews were never there at all.)

Nowadays more than half the Jews in Israel are from non-European extraction. And many of them can be considered refugees or the children of refugees, as they were forced out of their home countries, stripped of their citizenship, and forced to leave behind everything.
A bit of history:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_exodus_from_Arab_and_Muslim_countries
Loads of people have no idea that this happened to nearly a million Jews. To them, Jewish people are all rich white Europeans, because that fits nicely into the colonial narrative.

JUST SETTING THAT STRAIGHT. Back to arguing.

That is an extremely misleading and irresponsible article by Vice. The athlete in question, Mahmoud Sarsak, is not once questioned about his involvement with Islamic Jihad. Sarsak is an admitted member of the Islamic Jihad (http://bbcwatch.org/2012/10/16/bbcs-jon-donnison-on-football-and-politics/). He features extensively on the website of the military wing of the Islamic Jihad and has been pictured at their rallies. The leader of the Islamic Jihad calls him "one of our noble members".

In his appeal to the Israeli Supreme Court (remember that he asserts he was not even allowed to present his case in court), he argued that "much time had elapsed since he was connected to the PIJM and its activities" (http://en.idi.org.il/analysis/terro...ves-extended-detention-of-unlawful-combatant/).

The Islamic Jihad has been labelled a terrorist group by the United States, E.U., U.K, and Canada (among other nations). They have conducted dozens of attacks on civilians, killing hundreds (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Jihad_Movement_in_Palestine#List_of_attacks). Sam Al-Arian, an Islamic Jihad member in the United States was also jailed for terrorist activities (by the United States). Yet this website (http://www.freesamialarian.com/) purports that he is a freedom-loving activist (in the same vein as Sarsak).

I question why this was posted in the first place. This article was posted well over a month ago, and the situation was publicized several months ago. Why didn't you post about the Syrian footballer killed in Damascus by mortar fire (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/feb/20/syrian-footballer-killed-damascus-mortar)? Or about an incident in March 2012 when rockets were fired into an Israeli stadium during a football match between Beersheva and Um Al-Fahm? These rockets, coincidentally, were fired from a Gazan football stadium (http://www.algemeiner.com/2013/07/0...ll-fields-to-launch-missiles-at-israel-video/). I guess they simply didn’t suit your agenda.

Maybe he only just read it?

Shall we post a bunch of Israeli atrocities now to balance shit up?

How about we all agree that no side in this is RIGHT and we need a peaceful solution?
How about people stop with the "they did this so its ok for us to do that" bullshit and go look a few dead kids to bring it all home?

My apologies, as @ says, I literally only just happened upon it after following other football related links elsewhere.

I can assure you I have no agenda, I took the article on face value as it appeared to have a degree of legitimacy about it. I'm afraid I am unable to research and verify every story I post due to the fact I really can't be arsed, but I do welcome people who are willing to provide a counter argument with facts, and appreciate the effort you went to.
