Player Wilson Odobert

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Who’s getting carried away?!

Have I called him the second coming of Gareth Bale?! 😂

We’ve identified the type of winger needed & got him in under the radar for a decent sum.

No need to pour cold water on it.

Solanke is a great signing but not one that I'd go out my way to credit the scouts really. Credit the recruitment team and overall structure for finding the right profile and having the conviction to trust what you have identified. Especially with Toney on the market for cheaper.

Odobert is definitely a signing to give props to the scouts. Nobody in here - not a single sausage (maybe I can give Mercurial #10 his flowers here tbf) - was championing Odobert. He went massively under the radar but right from the first minute you can see exactly why they signed him. That's good scouting.

How his career pans out is another thing but that's exactly the case for every player you sign.

Looks like a proper footballer and at 19 has plenty of time to improve his game.

This summer / Jan / Next window we have signed a spine of top young talent.

Really impressive.

CB: Vuskovic
CM: Bergval
CM: Gray
Winger: Odobert
Winger: Min-hyeok Yang

Would love to see us find a left back in the ilk of the above signings to develop alongside Udogie.

This also excludes player like Dragusin, who 21 when signed feels like a more established signing.

Yes the point is we got a cheaper option that, based on a solitary game, seems to be almost as good as a Nico Williams or whoever else, with some wriggle room for development
I genuinely believe this is the best way forward for us as long as Levy/The board do not panic and see it through. Even if Ange doesn’t work out, get a similar style of coach. Maintaining continuity to a set a principles is important, Oct 19-Jul 23 (save for Feb-May 22) just wasn’t enjoyable.

You only have to look at the average age of the Pochettino team when we bought/introduced them to the 1st team, I think it’s only Hugo, Jan, Toby, Dembele & Wanyama that were 25 and over.

Adding to this I really believe in the quality of our academy atm. Obviously Moore is the jewel in the crown but, Lankshear, Donley, Hall, Dorrington, Black all look like big talents as well.

It seems like they've put the structures in place to ensure that smart decisions are made to identify players. Odobert definitely seems to have been data-lead.

Only works if:

- you stick with the idea of football which you alluded to.
- you have an elite scouting operation and by that I mean top 3-4 in the whole league.
- are willing to buy 2-4 elite young players each season. So Gray, Odobert and Bergvall level every year going forward so there is a continuous supply of top young players accepting that maybe 25-50% of them might not quite make it to the elite senior players you need.
- Be willing to sell older players or players who want out and reinvest the money so if Romero wants Madrid at end of the season you sell for £90m and buy 2-3 elite young players with the money.

I guess a Brighton or Dortmund on financial steroids is what I am saying.

I have always felt under ENIC this is the only way we will challenge the likes of Man City, Woolwich, Man United, Liverpool. We can’t do the typical route of elite manager buying already elite players with mega wages, we don’t pay the wages for a start.

You’re preaching to the converted here - I’ve been advocating for us to be doing this for over a decade.

Dortmund , Leipzig, Atletico (underrated for this because of Simeone’s reputation), Napoli, Atalanta, Villarreal have all done this to a various degree, and guess what? All have won silverware.

This is what we are doing.

1 or 2 established players and elite youngsters we could never afford when they hit their ceiling. Also recruit higher level academy kids too.

Of course you still need a bit of old school eye test. For example, I get the feeling that data was too heavily leaned on with the Brennan Johnson signing, whereas you can watch Odobert and immediately realise he has all the attributes we’re crying out for.

Much easier for those teams to win silverware in their leagues though as they don't have as much competition as us.

I'm not convinced that this exact model works in the Premier League, the margins are incredibly fine here - selling Romero for example will set us back more than people think because our rivals will get stronger whilst we will always be waiting for our team to peak.
