Competition World Cup 2026

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Hasn't the winner pretty much always has a player that is out of this world and on top of their game when it really counts ... Maradona, Pele, Zidane, Messi, R9, Beckenbauer, Charlton, Klinsmann, Rossi, Mbappe ... with 2 or 3 players that are not light years behind in quality.

Unless Father Time has done them in completely Messi and CR7 have the stardust and a supporting cast. Mbappe has decent support if he can get back to what he was. Anyone else that might step up and take centre stage ... Yamal maybe? Doue?

Exception that proves the rule could be Brazil last time it was in the US? Maybe that is what gives a bit of hope ... Italy were clearly better but Brazil got it over the line.
I'd say Kane is the best footballer in the world at the moment. I don't think it's enough to win it but England should be up there.

My dark horse is Norway. Good team, some really good players. What's the odds Norway reach the semi final.

This just isn’t true at all. They’re all key players for trophy and title winning sides. O’Reilly is an amazing talent - PL TOTY 100%.

To win a World Cup you need a good team ethos and a few top players. The rest don’t need to be elite, just good. England’s entire team is made up of some of the best the best league on earth has to offer, and then a few Barcelona, Bayern and Madrid players.
I think O'Reilly is a really good young talent and the ceiling on him is very high, but we are talking about winning a World Cup here ...

I really don’t think you’ve looked very closely at World Cup winning teams. National sides very rarely have eleven elite players.

O’Reilly has won several big trophies already, starts for Manchester City (one of the worlds best club sides) and was the best LB in the league last season.

He’s easily better, for example, than some of the nothing players Argentina had in their eleven.

We have more than enough quality. We will have one of the most valuable squads at the tournament by far.

Always feel that in this competition an incomplete team can still ride an unplayable striker a great distance. You’re seeing Kane Haaland etc against lesser defenders than they are accustomed to facing each week in the PL CL etc.

Personally would love to see Harry put the team on his back and silence everyone for all time about him

1. That's not really what I said, but if you were being honest England don't have more than 5 elite players and that is being kind. If the squad numbers are an indication of the starting 11 then Kane, Stones, James and Bellingham are the only ones that would definitely qualify. Most pundits seem convinced Rogers will start over Bellingham and the squad numbers suggest he is going to start Konsa out of position at right back.

2. I guess we are about to find out.

But very surprising that the wonderful waitresses of Boston will scream at people who don’t give them a wedge of cash above their agreed salary. You’d think they’d be comfortable already and not need poor Rab to top them up?

Seems impossible, but every day, I seem to be able to hate America and be disappointed in Americans more than the day before.
Everything that's wrong with the world, America and its people are behind it.

If cancer was a country and population.

Yes mate, the back to back CL and PL TOTY player Declan rice isn’t elite. What is the definition of elite in that case?

England have far more than 5 elite players, and even if that was the case that would still probably be more than Argentina definitively had.

Casual fans are all about to see, for example, how good Anderson is. Forest are knocking back £100m bids for a reason and city are chasing for a reason. He’s elite, he just hasn’t landed at a top club yet.

World Cups are a place where elite status can be made. Maybe Anderson will step up, hats off to him in that case.

I think he is a talent, but at the moment he is at Forest and in the 2 biggest games of his career he was monstered by John McGinn.

Rice isn't elite. I'm starting to believe the rumours about you being a gooner. You certainly sound as deluded as one at times.

He was quiet in the second game but he was the one doing the “monstering” in the first game.. he was sensational.

Ultimately in the second leg Forest were set up very badly and I struggle to see what he could really do.

I trust city’s scouting system. Anyone they want to spend that kind of cash on in a non-Gucci position is top. And my own eyes confirm that.

Tell that to UEFA. Back to back champions league team of the year.

Accepting reality doesn’t make someone a gooner. Rice is exceptional for club and country and the accolades reflect that. I expect our fans to reject that out of tribalism but that’s all it is

A world cup winning team usually has 6 or 7 world class players. How many do we have?

Kane, Bellingham, Rice, James ?
It might be so. Which teams have more?

Brazil: Allison, Marquinhos, Vini, Neymar (not so sure he is anymore)

France: Hernandez, Saliba?, Olise, Dembele, Mbappe

Argentina: Martinez?, Otamendi? , Messi, Alvarez. Martinez?

Spain: Rodri, Pedri, Olmo?, Ruiz. Jamal, Williams?

It's not a vintage World Cup by the look of it. Might add Cherki for France, and it's not impossible that Doue could have a break out tournament.

Portugal: CR7, Bruno, Vitinha, Ruben Dias, Cancelo, Nunes, Bernado Silva.

Saudi cancelo and CR7 are not world class. They’re just names. And if Nunes is world class, O’Reilly definitely is.

Ruben Dias is also no better than Guehi.
