I agree. I really feel that if Altidore can get hot during the World Cup than he can carry the US into the round of 16 and maybe quarterfinals. But maybe I'm just being overly optimistic

I don't know enough about your team to really comment on them, but looking at your group, you'll need a miracle to get out of it ahead of Portugal or Germany.
Pretty much... The US just doesn't have anyone to carry the team and our best hope is Altidore. So yeah, we're probably screwed. But isn't that the life of an American "soccer" fan? Getting overly optimistic every 4 years only to be disappointed because our team is below average even though we don't like to admit it
