Tim & AVB all but played him in a WB/defensive winger role anyway.

I think key would be get him motivated and exposed to a higher level of coaching by the time Redknapp left... He still seemed happy and motivated by then but by the time Poch arrived he was jaded.

I think we probably got the best out of his career anyway. Played his part in some legendary moments too, such as the assist for Crouch against AC Milan.

We did try to develop him. If I’m remembering correctly, we had Beckham working with him on his crossing.

That paid off :pochshock:

Absolutely pornographic.

That's one hell of a way to score your first PL goal. I'd have taken it going in off his arse after the missed header early on but that lovely finish should give him bags of confidence. Dare I say it: Son being unavailable might be the best thing for Lucas' immediate development.

As others have said, I was genuinely surprised by how hard he pressed Fulham players all match long. Even more surprised that he didn't need subbing off before the end. Engine.

The pass from Trippier & movement from Eriksen leading up to it was really impressive as well. Trippier can dink those little balls in so well when he gets the chance to. Was delighted to see Lucas score such a good goal to open his account. It should really give him a bit of confidence knowing he's now firmly a part of the team

The three at the back suits Trippier down to the ground. Can push up Benjamin-Mendy-levels of high and doesn't need to worry about a lack of recovery pace with Sanchez or Toby sweeping up behind him.

If he starts against United (which, come on, he should) then I hope we go three at the back again. Would rather not see him trying to track back against Sanchez or Martial.

I'm still not 100% behind the back three just so it utilises Trippiers strengths but it's definitely a great asset to have when we can mix formation up so seamlessly with the introduction of Winks, Dembele or Alderweireld etc when switching formation during a game. It's good that a team will have to gear up to play against us with two good formations we can switch about in mind.

Not ideal but we have the squad this season that allows us to. Got a lot of options if you throw Llorente's height in there as well

Sorry, didn't want to give the impression that I liked it just because of how it suits Trippier. As you say, it has other benefits including a lack of predictability.

Interesting to see how the United game unfolds. If the fuckers score first then we'll no doubt have to switch up our play to break down a parked bus.

No worries, you didn't give that impression, I just hope we don't resort to a getting it out to the wings and crossing it mentality this year when we have so many qualities that allow us to play through the middle. I wouldn't be surprised to see us be a team that uses the most formations this season. That could be a way Pochettino keeps things fresh and other teams guessing after a summer of inactivity. We certainly have all of the tools that allow us to

I think stylistically we'd be reasonable to expect Alli, Moura, Son and even Eriksen to hit 15 before Lamela, but if his assists and key pass contribution is high it doesn't really matter.

He said 15 goal season. Not 15 goals in the league.

Lamela scored 11 in 2015. 15 is possible.
He scored 11 in his best season, 2015-16, but 6 of those were in the Europey, where you're playing poorer teams, or demotivated ones. Now we're in CL again, where everyone's busting a gut to get to the big money knock out stages. So far he's not scored for us in CL, although he's not had much of a chance.

Imo his best attributes are:

- coming on as sub and running through MFs for assists (ie the other day, also MCFC away for Eriksen 2-1 win);
- Neat passes on the edge of the box to put players in one on one (ie twice for Kane v Leicester in matches I've been at).

I'd be really surprised to see him getting near double figures in a non-Europa season.

Thought had a decent game at weekend, winning the ball back, scoring. Played a few nice passes. Scored a cracker of a goal.
Yet Lucas often seems to have a poor first touch.
Watching him pre season it was evident, even though he produced some good stuff then.
Newcastle you could see it too. Giving the ball away.
It’s weird, as some times his control is good, other times the ball just bounces off his feet when he receives it, or he doesn’t keep it close enough.
As we saw weekend when through on goal.
No doubting his ability, but I think he’s going to be one of those frustrating players. He’ll produce something magic and then do your head in.
Very similar to Lamela first season I suppose.
Now Lamela moves the ball on quickly, doesn’t lose possession often, defends and chooses his runs wisely.
Maybe it’s an adaptation thing,

Just to add to that, for a small bloke he has got some spring in him. Wins headers he shouldn’t.

If Lamela keeps getting into the box like he does and, more importantly, receives the ball he could.
He had two decent chances to score in what 20+ mins at the weekend.

3 of those were against Monaco in the group stage as a first half hat trick, so don't dismiss them quite so lightly

Pretty much the same Monaco that went on that massive CL run before being picked over by the 'big' clubs.

Subasic is still having nightmares about that match

Didn't he clock a first half hat-trick against fiorentina as well in that campaign? Another club that is far from a pushover

He got one, Mason one and an OG at WHL, the dolphin got the only goal away at theirs

But yes, 4 of his goals against Fiore and Monaco not to be sniffed at

By the by, the ties against Fiore in 2015 and 2016 are up there as personal favourites - their tifosi were awesome, and, like our Dortmund games in consecutive seasons, showed our progress year on year as a club - actual measurable benchmarks

Thinking about the European nights we have had from 2015 onwards in the ropey cup and the Champions League just gave me goose bumps, especially when I think back to the lack of them in the decades previous

Congratulations once again with proving you're the biggest numpty on this forum.

There's a post for everything.

Really? Half an hour left in the game and you're more bothered about point scoring?

You're a wrong'un. I went and hid in the bathroom when it went 0-2. It means so much to me that my nerves go to pieces and my blood pressure goes shooting up.

As I've said before, I like to see a player play 10 or so times before forming an opinion. Still early days with Lucas but looks like he could be great option up top.

Then why did you form said opinion?

As I said, before he even joined, Lucas Moura is a brilliant player.

Maybe see this as an eyeopener that SUPPORTING our players is better than nitpicking at every little thing they do wrong.

Support the team and wake the fuck up.
