Transfers Summer 2019 transfer thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

You know it's silly season when a player having a picture taken with his teammate on international duty is transfer news.

Hitc is a click are site so no surprise - they do this day in and day out outside the transfer window as well.

Just a bunch of lads larking around with one posting it in social media, and as it's Foyth and Lo Celso plus half a dozen others it's labelled as Foyth and Lo Celso' with a suitable story just to drive traffic

4231 with 2 defensive mids (Dier/Wanyama/Dembele) gave us by far our best season in 16/17, albeit a little bit defensive looking.

The rise of Sissoko has been great, but the decline of Wanyama, Dier and loss of Dembele has hurt us and stopped us playing this winning formula.

I like Winks, Eriksen, Dele - but if you put any of them in the 2 man midfield it's simply not the same system.

I don't believe we lack or lost quality in defence or attack since then, Walker wasn't that important. It's the midfield cover, breaking up play in different areas, positions taken with and without the ball, and of course the transition from defence to attack that I identify as what we do differently now.

At the time I remember Dembele blaming the narrow pitch of White Hart Lane causing teams to set up defensively in the middle against us. Whether or not that's the case, we scored more and conceded less then.

The last 3 seasons we conceded 26>36>39 league goals. 0.68 to 1.03 per game.
As for goals scored, 86>74>67. 2.26 to 1.76 per game.
Goal difference, +60>+38>+28
Really concerns me having a 32 goal swing in our goal difference in a 2 year period.

So in regards to transfers - it feels to me like the system, or lack of personnel to implement and repeat a winning formula is more the problem. I don't rate Dier, but believe we missed him more than I would like to admit, or at least the duty he performs. Would maybe say his most useful quality was winning headers all over the midfield. I like the idea of Tielemans, Ndombele and other good footballers we have been linked with - but there's perhaps an argument for getting Dier back fit, and bringing in another central midfielder over 6ft next to him / Sissoko (as Wanyama and Dembele are) rather than these smaller (in frame as well as height) creators?

English football is certainly back on the map, a season where both European finals were all English affairs. Top managers seem destined for these shores as well, and a lot of Europe’s top players want to play in the EPL.....The usual big hitters Real, Barca & Bayern seem they are having to reinvent themselves all over again and PSG will always be a joke........
So we might not have a better chance to tempt the cream of European football to WHL, opportunities to attract a Philip Coutinho for example, or even bring back Mr Bale would have seemed impossible a few seasons ago, now these kind of players are actually being discussed as possible targets.....umm, sadly we will stumble across the same old problem we always have, wages!!.......my thinking is we need to be quick to act this summer, and dig deep into more financially realistic wage pool, like Ajax for example, before other clubs get their mits on them!!

The best football we played in 16/17 was in the 3421 formation. (Or another variation of 3 at the back)

I've seen this kid play for a full season, absolute quality, I like Dier but Godfrey is physically stronger, much faster and has a never say die attitude. Their playing style is different, Dier is a holding player that's a good passer and can spray a pass, Godfrey covers a significant amount of ground and can drive forward with the ball, think Sissoko but can pass and has purpose when he runs.
I'm much faster than Dier..........love Simon the snail.

I think I can see a meeting between Levy and Eriksen/His Agent which goes like:

'So Mr Eriksen, what do you want next season :

- CL football and possibly having the chance to win it. You might reflect on why Spurs were in the final and Real/Barca were not.

- Playing with top Players - well Kane is considered one of the world's best strikers, Son one of the best AM's etc. And we are bringing in several others who have already made a name for themselves in other major leagues, this transfer window

- Working with one of the world's top coaches. I think you will find Mr Pochettino has that reputation

- Training in one of the world's best Training Centres, and playing in one of the world's top stadiums. I think most commentators would agree Spurs have that.

- Living on one of the World's most interesting cities. There's a reason why London is one of the most visited cities on earth and why London is so cosmopolitan with so many people not born in Britain choose to live here.

- Wages, you are on £80k pw having turned down previous contract offers. How does an extra £100k pw sound to you ?

Now what else were you wanting ?
Sneaky! Pretending Eriksen wouldn't want a league title. CL or nothing!

Agreed.

- Nations League
- Euro Qualifiers
- Copa America

If we sign anyone, I don't think it'll be until end of June, early July.

Ndombele is playing matches over this weekend for France but after that is free ( just as Spurs E players are ) so no international football to get in the way of signing. Just Mr Aulas - but it's said he needs to sell before 30 June

Lo Celsa is involved with Copa America now and finals for that are 7 July, so that one may well be delayed until after Argentina's last match.

Sessegnon has gone quiet but E u21' are free after this weekend I think.

It’s the challenging for trophies line that irritates me the most I think. Our players have had legitimate challenges for the PL, FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League in the last few years. We have qualified for the Champions League for the past few years straight and there’s no reason to think we won’t again this coming season. Is the hope that they can ride on someone’s coattails to actually get a trophy from one of these appearances then, or do they plan on putting forward a winning performance on their own?
We look miles off winning the title & you can't base a season around winning the CL.
Fact is modern day Tottenham rarely win a cup & if we do it's a domestic 1. So he could go elsewhere & pick up medals & higher wages. Do you think we are likely to win the title or CL next season? I think if your honest you'll say no.
