Difficult to sign strikers in January is the line now

And in the summer it will revert back to the "no one will be willing to come in and be second fiddle to Kane"
Do you know why people say these things? A number of fans on here say them. Almost every journalist and commentator say them. The ex footballers in the media say them.

Maybe it’s because they are true?

In a moment of boredom I was doing this yesterday when, lo and behold, someone popped up and cited half of them in one post, so I'm afraid we already have a winner. Since then, the rest have been trotted out, but hey ho, I'll post it anyway...

As in he was scouted by our scouts, in view to selling him for a profit later on. Poch just agreed with it, knowing it wouldn't affect his purchases.

CE left which gave us space and funds for Bergwijn, but clearly JM still wanted a striker, we're scratching around for Giroud at the end of the window. That doesn't indicate there are funds available to buy a decent striker.
CE left for 16m and Bergwijn signed for 27m. So that's 11m that potentially could have been available in the summer. Add to that Clarke was 10m and according to you a "Levy punt" so you think maybe Levy wouldn't have taken the 'punt' and added that to the striker transfer kitty had Poch insisted on a striker? I mean that's 21m accounted for right there.

No need to bring Mourinho in this as its clear he wants/wanted a striker. This was simply about my statement about Poch clearly not thinking he needed one in the summer.

Bergwijn is decent, im sure Mourinho wanted the Portuguese boy too, just disappointed we havent got a striker

In the summer we need fullbacks for each side, a centre back, defensive mid & a striker

Quite abit but not impossible, i would like us to do all of our business early

54m on N'dombele
43m in Lo Celso
10m on Clarke
25m on Sessegnon

As reported by the evening standard those were our 4 targets going into the summer and we got all 4 of them. Surely Poch must have been ok with this and Levy delivered.

This Jan he has given Mourinho:
50m option on Fernandes
27m on Bergwijn.

I've posted previous about Levy/Enic and stated they need to be doing much more but on this occasion they have. It's not their fault we have performed so shite.
Really neglecting the squad for two windows previously has got us into this mess so they are also complicit in this as well.

Reading reports that Real Sociedad wanted €30m for Willian Jose. Much better to spend that on Bergwjin in my opinion.

Let's just say that Kane is back in 5-6 games as we know he's a quick healer. Long shot and all hypothetical but for €30m do we get someone who might be a star for the next ten years for us or lump it on someone who will inevitably be playing second fiddle once Harry is back?

Still don't believe there isn't/ wasn't someone knocking about who could have done a temporarily better job than a 17 year old kid etc. What will be will be I guess.

Poch probably thought that 21 million isn't going to be enough to buy the striker we need and he'd be right.

Trouble is we rush him back too quickly because we are always desperate as we never have adequate cover.

just can’t defend it anymore mate. It’s been year on year of this bollocks, one excuse after another. Short arms and deep pockets our chairman.

Okay, but why expect different? It just sets people up for disappointment. It's like marrying someone and then being disappointed when they aren't someone else.

Some people might imply that this means that I don't care as much, I don't have as much passion or whatever nonsense. I didn't start supporting Spurs because they were the biggest team in the world, spent tons of money on marquee signings or won dozens of trophies. I fell in love with Spurs, warts and all and always cheer for them despite them always making it easy to do so.

Is this defeatist? I don't think so, rather just having realistic expectations.

Here's my thinking and my potential defense of Levy and Co.

Spending 30 million now means we have 30 million less to spend this summer. That 30 million could help us get top 4 and make deep Cup runs, but ultimately, is the team we've seen play for the last 12 months capable of doing either of those things, even if we had a decent striker? Realistically, I think the board looked and said chances of us achieving our goals this season are pretty small. Not zero but maybe not worth risking 30 million.

Now, in the summer, I'm sure we will want to invest heavily in certain positions. If 30 million is the difference between bringing in two studs at say DM and RB, would that be worth it? It very well could be.
