It’s not the end of the world, because a draw against a good Palace team after three big results happens.
But I have to say, I think the approach and team selection was very wrong today and I was really worried seeing Jose pick a basically unchanged team. It’s a classic trap game in that we’re coming off three good and hard won results with two much bigger fixtures later in the week.
We would have been much better off giving some of our performing squad players a trot out today so they could bring some intensity and energy into the side. Sissoko and Bergwijn have been excellent the last three matches, but wouldn’t you want to save their graft for the two tougher games later in the week and maybe give Lo Celso, Lucas, or even Vinicius a run out to be a bit more enterprising. I think it would have been a great game for Rodon considering his aerial prowess against Benteke.
I thought we looked tired and a little bit lacking in focus after the first half an hour, which is totally understandable after the run of fixtures we’ve had. But now what do you do? Trot the same team out at Anfield and against Leicester? I worry about the energy levels now.
If you don’t trust your squad during the Christmas period, you’re not going to come away with the number of points you want. It’s that simple.
Anyway, the result isn’t the worst thing but I think it was very predictable and avoidable which is very frustrating and I don’t feel great about the next two considering the way some of our stalwarts looked a bit drained. Interesting challenge for Jose.
