You realize Son wasn't always a guaranteed starter on our team right? Poch would sit him in certain games/situations. Son hasn't been playing well and now that others are stepping up, we can see how we look with other players rotating in and out. I'm almost certain Lamela/GLC/Dele etc. can get 1 goal and a few assists over a 11 game span. Giving opponents different looks with different players makes us less predictable and gives the rest players need to succeed over the long haul.

This is an argument for even more investment, not a sign we shojld just give up on Top 4 and the CL revenue.
Buying younger quality players is what will ensure that we continue to get CL revenue. Also you cannot rely on CL revenue beyond the group stage, as an unfortunate draw can see us exiting the tiurnament earlier (e.g. RBL is almost certain to go out in this round, while a better draw could have seen them progress further.

Unless you can convince Levy to loosen the purse strings, we dont have the funds to keep our most valuable players and still be able to add quality to the squad. Instead what we are left with is continous bargain bin shopping, and the occassional hyped academy youngster. That is part of what got us into our current situation with a mismanaged squad

Not only would selling Son weaken our team, the loss in revenue from European prize money (CL qualification or going deep in Europa) in next few seasons would probably mean we lose the money gained by selling him.
This is why having a ‘selling feeder club’ mentality never works in the long run.
Dortmund seems fine and we can have their type of mindset but a bigger budget.

We are not an oil club; we cannot afford to spend recklessly... it needs to be sell high and buy smart.

It’s been over a decade of careful business that put us in the champions league for 4 straight years.

You are assuming that his replacements would not be good enough.

Using valuation from transfermkt, we could sell Son and use the money to buy both Vinicius and Sabitzer. Are you claiming we would be weaker upfront with those two players in our starting lineup instead of Son?

Bundesliga is not as competitive as PL so it’s easier for Dortmund to qualify for the CL, and thus gain that revenue.
They also have a bigger pool of players to choose from when replacing big players, as it’s likely that those who have done well in the likes of Ligue 1 could do well in Bundesliga.
It’s harder for Spurs as signing a player from a foreign league is a massive risk as they may not be PL suitable.

Son is probably at peak value now, and what we could sell him for going forward may decline.

So let’s say we get rid of him for 80 mil, but who do we replace him with?

The last time we got rid of a player at peak value, Bale, we replaced him with a gang of players who included Soldado, Eriksen, Lamela, Paulinho, Chadli etc.

None of them ever became as good as Bale.

He’s also a clinical finisher so could easily reinvent his game in his 30s in more of a CF role.
Aubamayang relies on athleticism to a far greater extent than Son, and he was in great form last season while aged 31.
He's actually a patchy finisher and also relies on his pace to get into scoring situations. He doesn't have the physicality to make up for a drop off in pace.

As for being clinical, he has a few worldies over the course of the season that makes his averages look good. I admit that he had a great string of finishing during the first dozen games or so but he's got just 1 goal over the last 11 and it's not like he hasn't had any chances.

and after that we still made Sissoko and Sanchez our record signings!

The problem was not with selling Bale but with our scouting and buying.

Not selling Bale wouldnt have stopped us from buying crappy players, but might have stopped us investing in the squad like Levy did after Sanchez and co.

Sabitzer is at best a marginal improvement on our current best midfield 3: GLC Ndombele Hojbjerg.
Vinicius Jr is nowhere near as good as Son.

That’s a good example of how much we’d suffer if we lost Son.
But with Sabitzer we wont be shit cos GLC is out injured, and while Vinicius Jr is not as good as Son this season, he is good enough in the short term. With every passing season he will get better while Son will only decline further.

Overall we will be a better team with both players than we will be with Son declining

Vinicius Jr isn’t fit to clean Son’s boots and never will be.
