Hercules on SC posting an educational lesson for the plebs - this shit does make me laugh...:levylol:

I am posting lot today (I am aware) but this is for educational purposes. This is not a game of Monopoly, or Football manager. Facts are the PL are in a very strong financial position, pandemic inclusive. European clubs are basically skint! When clubs like ours come in for one of their players, they turn giddy, thinking their lotto numbers have come in. They then try to negotiate replacements. Agents hear about it, and add a few digits with selling club.

Selling club try to past that into buying club. Buying club threatens to walk away. They engage with another selling club, and more importantly agree a fee. Agent:s hear about it, they do not want to miss their gravy. Original selling club of preferred player starts to panic. Wants to invite other bids. None come in! What do you think they try next? There is your answer.

We'll always fall back on the cheap option

This club is addicted to stockpiling average players that we can never get rid off

It's all just rinse and repeat , this story has played out so many times , how could anyone think it ends any other way than cheap C or D options coming in and Son & Kane just about carrying us to 6th or 7th at best

Meh

Have we not learned that after signing Rodon(not that he's shit player) because Dias was too expensive??

You have to pay top money to get top quality, there's no shortcut.
Is Romero 60 mil good? What if we offer the 60 mill and then Atalanta change their minds he and want 70 mill instead? Where does it all end.

I remember so clearly how many people were pleading with Levy to just pay whatever it took to sign Ndombele, 40, 50,60 mill, it didn't matter just pay Lyon. He was supposedly the real deal, the man to replace Dembele and dominate our play. He was touted as an absolute certain success, his fans were telling everyone to watch the City Lyon CL game and see what a monster Ndombele was.

I don't know much about Romero like I didn't know much about Ndombele but I'm definitely more wary about overhype and the danger of overpaying as a result. I'm sure the club have made a good offer, 40 mill plus 10 mill add ons seems then one mentioned the most which tbf is massive money for a center half. If it's accepted great but if not and Atalanta keep moving the goalposts then surely we have to look elsewhere.

For some folks we should take any scraps thrown our way when selling, but when we're buying players we should pay whatever ridiculous amount we are quoted.

And on top of that, they claim that Levy is utterly clueless when it comes to business.

Who says that?

You are making stuff up to argue against.

Paying proper value for Romero is not paying whatever ridiculous amount we are quoted.

Agree. People get transfer delirium on here.

I hope he comes, as by most accounts he's pretty damn good, but we can't just pay whatever fee Atalanta demand. We have other areas to address as well.

Feck Romero - didn't Smalling dominate Serie A?
Good point. Fazio stars there, too.

That is probably the most sensible post he has ever made. Grammar and spelling OK, too.

If they keep upping the price then move on. The issue we have, with this window and in the past is rather than moving on to other top quality players we instead go for the dirt cheap, crap option instead.

If Atalanta were fucking around and we pulled out of the deal and went for a Kounde/Varane level player I doubt you would hear much complaints.

But when we pull out if these deals and go for Rodon/Milenkovic/Zouma level players instead it isn’t good enough.

Don't think it's going to happen.

From Gold's article this morning it's looked like they've changed strategy.

Toby Foyth already sold, Tanganga out on loan, Aurier to be sold.
Replaced by Milenkovic, Tomiyasu, Zouma.

Lots of strength in depth at CB with Rodon, Sanchez, Dier, Milenkovic, Zouma.
Lots of bodies, no quality whatsoever

rather play u18’s than most of those aforementioned zombies

Yes, and to me that's where we actually don't have leverage. What other 55-60M CB is available, at that level and would want to come to us? We know it's not Kounde. Who else could even fit that bill, whether we're linked or not?

That's why we have to pay for Romero this window. And I understand that "just pay up" has also become a saying with no nuance. But at this point if you look at the full situation, it's the right thing to do, even if it means we have to play Doherty at RB instead of upgrading.

We simply can't go into the season with Dier-Milenkovic or something like that in the back line if we have any ambitions at all.

We went for Kounde but he wants CL football. I guess Varane would expect the same, plus massive 300k a week wages.

I agree about at least having other targets of comparable quality, as I said earlier its a shame Lacroix and Schuurs are unavailable this summer. So who else is there comparable to Romero and willing to join a non CL club? Should we go for Boateng as a short term fix until Jan or next summer when we can again attempt to sign a Lacroix or Schuurs? I can't think of anyone else tbh

I can see this from two perspectives. The first is that Atalanta know we really want Romero and decided to jack the price up on the guy at the last minute. The second is that Atalanta says "we want 55". Levy says "how about 43?"
"We want 55."
"How about 47".
"55"
"52?"
"Fuck you asshole. Its 65 now."

He’s 23 and if as they say an outstanding prospect then even at 60,65 million Tottenham will double their money in 5years
