When I was 8 (during the time of Francis) my uncle gave me one of those “history of Spurs” photo books, accompanied by match reports and player profiles.

It was basically based around 1960-91.

17 trophies and tonnes of entertainment according to the archives. Read that thing cover to cover. Those are the standards I hold the club to.
Would that be pope Francis?
Connie Francis, Trevor? Gerry....?
That's his main problem. He has the mentality of a small club manager. At Wolves it doesn't matter if you lose a cup match by resting players, the priority is to survive in the league. He does not belong at a club that wants to win something.
Sounds like he's at the perfect club....

This is what I'm considering here though. With a chairman who would go and offer Parker big money and the freedom of a large transfer budget, I'm sure we could get him. But we all know that won't happen. With our current situation and the way we're run I don't see Parker walking away from Bournemouth even though we're a far, far bigger team.
I think Parker would take the job, even under the restraints of working with Levy, but we wouldn't get past the first hurdle of agreeing to pay reasonable compensation to Bournemouth by the looks of it so it's kind of irrelevant.

Same with Potter imo.

Rose, Dele and Wanyama were really only ever great players under Poch, Eriksen, Dembele, Walker and Toby all hit by far their highest heights under him.

Whether it was managerial brilliance or just a twist of fate, Poch raised the level of that squad beyond their real underlying quality.

That’s a very rare thing in the modern game. And that’s what it would take to meaningfully compete with the top of the PL the way we operate.

I agree with you. And I did not mean to take anything away from fact that he helped them to raise their game to these mentioned heights. He helped to raise them there.

But that does not change the fact that after raising their levels he never was able to get them over the line. Furthermore - he totally lost this golden touch with players after that bunch. After them, everyone coming through the door (and those already in) got worse and worse.

I feel that Levy/ENIC and Poch are both like arcs, just with different trajectory.
ENIC&Levy took us over, put us on better footing, raised our profile and made us a CL club from midtable. That was their peak and after that we have started slide back down, as they have made many big mistakes.
Poch took us over from accidental CL-qualifiers, made us mainstay in the comp and steered us to the final (latter also with much luck) but simultaneously with our final-run, everything started to slide down fast - we had peaked under him. Those who he helped to improve their game had peaked, but he was not able to promote anyone from youth side and all the incomings were poorer then their predecessors. Their level did not rise anymore like once levels of Eriksen and Dembele did.

So based on that I would willingly bet 1000 EUR / pound that if Poch would take over tomorrow, it would end in a dumpster fire unfortunately. It does not work in a way that you look back at you "good old times", take one factor from there and all the positives are still there. It's not.

The bigness of Spurs as a club is beside the point really. This is a booby trapped job as long as it continues along its terminal squad decline post-Summer 2018.

Any manager now is just waiting for Kane to go. After which looms disaster.

It’s only after that cycle is complete that there will be any opportunity to build something here.

I can tell you were a staunch Poch out in November 2019 and probably wanted to appoint Mourinho. Poch did need a break but I can assure you we would have performed better this season and last season with Poch. The fact is at the moment we are clueless and Nuno was a very poor choice for the role he was on no fans list of managers that we wanted.

Yes. Poch had to go. As painful as that was he had taken us as far as he could (look at my previous post here in the topic where I explained how we had peaked and were on downward spiral under him).
We had gathered 1 point per game for what was it ? 25 games in EPL? And we had not made a truly successful signing for 5 years. We couldn't continued like this. If we would, there was literally 0 chance we would have finished last 2 seasons even in top 10.

Of course looking back the change should have been much more decisive and bigger. Mou was taken on based on the assumption many here believed - that we have functioning squad that just need right kind of nudge to achieve stuff. And I actually liked some things that Mou did, I am not afraid to say it. He made a decision once and for all about Eriksen, Rose and KWP. And despite Hjojberg having his flaws, he is still better than 10 preceeding purchases in the time when Poch was our manager.

We should have made much bigger clear-out and our scouting system needed big re-do. Like a really burn-it-to-ground-and-start-everything-from-zero re-do. Looking back Mou was not right guy to bring in. And in this instance neither is NES.

All that does not mean sacking Poch at the time he was sacked was wrong decision.

Fuck me, how could we dream of prising away a manager from the mighty Bournemouth??? It would be unheard of!

:mourshock:

Jesus, this is really what that little weasel Levy has done to the perception of this club with his series of disastrous decisions. Got our own fans believing we couldn't take the manager off of a Championship club if we wanted to...
Its crazy. I've heard people saying the same about Potter and Franks. They won't leave mid season to join us. Do fans really believe this? All 3 would crawl over broken glass to come to Tottenham.

Its a complete joke that what you've said here is completely true. Our best striker (with the additional component of being very loyal) in donkeys years and we have to wait until he leaves until we build something new again!

Nuno will be sacked by Christmas, we will appoint Potter, he will lose matches, fans will call for another manager…

Rinse repeat. You’re all looking in the wrong places for answers. It’s not the manager.
Potter would get all the time in the world from me because I've factored him what he's done before and I believe it would translate well to Spurs.

Nuno didn't impress me before, I never wanted him, what I'm seeing is no shock to me and it's the same dull crap he's served up at other clubs.

Yep ditto fucking Potter. These people have Stockholm syndrome. Said it many times. News flash. We could have had Conte. But Levy and Lewis are not running a football club. Its them AND THEY ARE NOT SPURS!

The amount of people brainwashed into thinking the squad is bad is remarkable.

Is it Chelsea/Liverpool/City? No.

But how many players from West Ham start in our squad? 2-3 out of 11? Brentford is playing better football than us. Are you going to say that squad is better than Spurs?

This squad is easily 5th or 6th best in the league. The fact that we’ve had bad managers doesn’t change that.
Antonio over this dying Kane. Soucek/Rice over Skipp/PEH any day. Benrahma is more of a man than Ndombele. Fornals over Lucas easily. Any of their CBs over Dier. Our RBs arent that great either.

You're full of shit, buddy. Completely ignorant or simply fucking trolling.

You realise the shit signings you're bleating on about were not Poch's targets? You realise he was on his knees begging for the club to back him?
You realise he was forced to work with 0 new signings for one and a half fucking years?, and before that on a transfer budget comparible to Crystal Palace and Burnley?

Why do you think we finished up with Nuno after every credible, worthy candidate turned down the fuckin job?

We get shit signings because that's what Levy is willing to fund. The ENIC model.

Grealish. Wijnaldum. Sadio Mane. Fernandez .... have you even heard of these players?

I sometimes wonder if you're even a football fan, let alone a fucking Spurs fan.
