Back-up still required?
Would have to be a young HG forward. I believe Ben Brereton is out of contract at the end of the season.

Sell Rodon instead (pointless him being here) / Keep Davies for squad
Rodon is better and younger.

Also: Sell Ndombele, Lo Celso
We can sell one of them max. Which creative mid could we bring in? Barely any in the market.

Rodon is better and younger.

It doesn't mater if no manager is gonna play him (today's squad selection confirmed Rodon is done here.... He is evidently bottom of the pecking order.)..... At the very least, Davies can actually boast a left foot and seems to have Conte's backing.

Again, this is moot if the manger can't (GLC) or won't (TN) play them....

Why not bin them both off and fund another purchase.

Which as per your shopping list give us:
Goncalves & Kessie + Skipp, PEH & Sarr + ???

Regardless of trophies; if we're still dicking about trying to transition the squad in 2 years time then the Conte 'project' will have been a waste of time and we'll just be passing the same old quadries over to the next guy.

Revolution > Evolution.

It's frustrating because Rodon has played well when I've seen him, and even internationally. Davies is a liability.

Sarr has been dropped from the Metz team, so will need another season in Ligue 1 at least.
I agree with you that we need to think long term, but if we sell Ndombele and GLC, who provides creativity in the long run? Maybe you could move Gil to central mid, and then buy Luis Diaz at LW as a long term Son replacement.

What's the point of that Goncalves bloke you picked if not to jazz our MF up? ....If not to do so, then we're shopping from the wrong shelf.

......Why not just get Brosavic and build from there the summer after?

Brosavic & Kessie + Skipp, PEH & Sarr = fuck all spent + money incoming from potential sales of Winks, Dele, Gio & TN to spend on an absolute gem...... Or even go hard on Phillips with the dosh and lock down a HG MF general for years to come.

Maybe chuck Eriksen in on another free too for a bit of creative depth.

Goncalves is a great goalscorer, and we need goals from midfield, but not the most creative player.

Brozovic is already 29 and set to sign a contract extension. I don't rate Phillips that much, his passing is a bit mediocre and he'll be so expensive. Was taken off at half time yesterday because he wasn't good enough.
I don't mind the idea of converting Gil to a CAM if we move to a 3-5-2, but right now the kid doesn't seem strong enough for PL.

I know his sister..... Beth-Nell.
I once went out with her sister, Forest Green

Fuck me it was overgrown down there

In which case, it feels to me like you're trying to add sparkle rather than actually building a MF from the ground up.

Maybe he signs a new deal; maybe not.... TBH. he's just a name d'jour anyway.... But someone that fits that mold is the fundamental requirement here..... Someone that can knit without getting over-run by the average EPL CM stomper.

He's just coming back from injury so likely still finding his legs (played against us at the back).... He's good enough. I didn't necessarily mean as a play-maker though.

Look at it another way.... Who of our MFs would you absolutel insist we kept... Probably only Skip if we're honest and that's cos he's HG, young, decent and still has room to grow and would apprea that he'll at least cut it as a squad player for the coming years even if he doesn't nail a starting spot longer term.

If you're building a MF from scratch; why not Phillips?

Why? ...... He's a dribbler, not a passer? You'd be taking all his space to run away trying to wedge him into the MF of a 532...... Why already are people chewing on this idea that he'll be able to go head-on against the CMs & DMs of an EPL MF?

Maybe, I'm mistaken, but when people say CAM..... That's typically a 4231-centric idea anyway?

I think his dribbling and passing ability could see him quite effective in the middle, maybe I'm wrong on that one. David Silva was also a winger in La Liga, and then moved to mid in PL.

I want to keep Ndombele, I am hoping he comes good under Conte.

I think he'll be so expensive and is quite overrated. Neither Leeds nor England seem to have much control over the game with him in midfield. His passing in the Euros was so unambitious.

David Silva was playing CAM in a 4231 for the most part.... We won't be.

Well that's different... Fair enough. (I won't drag this down the "Is Ndombele a fat lazy dosser" rabbit-hole.)

The weak link in our MF was Mount; not Phillips..... Still, just floating the idea. He would instantly become our best DM; can handle the ball, good at the grunt work and a good engine.

My main concern is that if we're to have brought in 2 MFs over the next 2 windows (in your case Goncalves & Kessie) that we have a MF that actually works well by design; rather than spending another year or two experimenting and trying to find the right blend out of a bunch of players scouted without a cohesive whole in mind.

......Again; the focus being 352 and/or 343 cos that's our immediate future; regardless of if we have a sudden fancy for the latest hot-shot #10 to come on the scene (be honest, does that somewhat describe Goncalves?).

Solved all our issues, although it might cost a little bit of money.

I think Conte is far more likely to start clearing out our excess wingers (Bergwijn an obvious starting spot) than buying new ones. I think he’ll want to build his traditional 3-5-2 and is only playing 3-4-3 because we don’t have the right midfield players or enough strikers.

I'm not that convinced Kessie is better than ehat we have.
I also think the links to him are a little too obvious in terms of media narrative. Most of our moves this summer were quiet until they were pretty much wrapped up, except Romero. We’ll see though, Paratici did like a Bosman at Juve.

I think he's a good bit better than what we have, but what we have is very poor in midfield so that's not difficult. I think he's off to PSG, or some other club that's bigger than ours. I think Brozovic is the better player and would make a bigger difference to our performance over the next few years, if we were to target an out of contract midfielder in Serie A.
