See plenty of CM chat on here, a few thoughts:

You need a CM clearly capable on both sides of the ball that can play in a two or a three, clearly a big engine is essential for Conte.

I think Wijnaldum suits that and with his age would bode well for Papa Sarr to understudy him. Renato Sanchez would be an exciting option. Youri Tielemanns isn't signing a new contract and is perfect for that role but not sure we'd be quite the step he's looking for.

I like Phillips a lot as well.

Part of me is cautious of having too many players of the same mould such as PEH/Skipp and say Wiljnaldum or Phillips. But with Conte it almost feels like you do just want clones of players for each position so they can slot in and out without need for system/tactic tweeks. Clearly that way at WB and I think that's what we might start seeing with our squad development.

The ones currently on the outside, Ndombele, Alli, Gil etc all seem the ones who don't fit the positional needs.

Just read this article about Maxence Lacroix and how he's done this season. Well, he's already gotten 2 red cards and caused 3 penalties...
I have hardly seen him play and stats can lie but stats can also show certain things about players as well...

Barcelona reportedly want to move on Frenkie De Jong.

Would he work in a Conte midfield?
Both him and ter Stegen have underperformed this season....so both could be up for grabs. Frenkie de Jong apparently wants to stay as he's always dreamed of playing for Barca... but Nicolás González has played better than him this season.
But Barca are looking at €60m and, apparently, Man Utd. are sniffing around.

De Jong did turn us down in the summer of no signings because he knew that Barca was sniffing around. So fair to him I guess.

Yeah pretty annoying knowing your best player will leave ever summer..

Sometimes to Bayern

For free……

But in the interim they benefit from having some of the best young talent.

Meanwhile teams that are “too good” for sell on clauses spend millions on dross they end up selling for a loss

Unless you are a carbon club the Dortmund model makes a lot more sense

If there’s a sniff we could get Phillips we should be all over it. Real quality. (If they could throw in Luke Ayling that would be perfect. )
Sadly I think Phillips will be off to Liverpool.

Let's be honest.... Dortmund doesn't so much represent a broader 'model'(*) as it does reflect a fairly unique niche they've carved themselves and as "the stepping-stone club for the elite".... (Clear #2 in a top league; virtual guarantee of CL each year yet next to no pressure to perform beyond par....)

These days, elite teenagers are typically scooped up by the richest clubs academies.

(*A model for which our fan-base has commonly exhibited that they don't have the stomach for anyway!)

Domestically, those that 'come up the hard way' are typically looking for a Palace/Leicester/WestHam sized club to use as a springboard to stardom...... Commercially; we'd have to drop down a level to regularly successfully exploit that market. You could say we (and Arse, Everton.... And until recently Liverpool) are between a rock and a hard place where you're left paying market-rate or above for the EPL players that the richest clubs don't want or spending big on risks like Ndombele or Pepe.

Yet another to add to the list of one season wonder CBs.

Obviously don't watch Wolfsburg much but I've seen him have two very good games this season. And saw him have one stinker. Still a top cb prospect, but playing inconsistently in a team that's struggled in it's manager change. Virgil Van Dijk was a year away from joining Celtic at his age, Harry Maguire was at Sheffield.

Yep. VVD was shit but got better. But lots of CBs are shit and stay shit.
I don't want another Sanchez or Foyth.
