Ossie and Ricky Summer 1978.........Definitely the case in the last 20 or so; too depressing to think that I have to go back to when I started supporting us in the late Sixties!![]()

Not sure we couldn’t beat them home or away with virtually same line ups. Need to win this game as everyone knows what our record is like v chavs. Hopefully this season we don’t just lie down and let them come at us.Conte has a few interesting decisions for this one
1) RWB... Surely Doherty is favourite, as long as he's fit enough. If not, then Emerson. Probably too soon for Spence. Missed a bit of pre season and Conte won't throw him in until he's physically, tactically and mentally ready. Lucas I think will be used at RWB mostly as an attacking sub, a useful option with the 5 sub rule.
2) LWB. Perisic to start if fit. Knows Conte's system inside out and is the clear first choice.
3) LCB. Sanchez did pretty well there against Rangers, but Lenglet offers much more in the buildup, so should start assuming Davies is out.
4) Midfield. Really not at all sure what his thinking is on this. Surely we want Bissouma in there for Chelsea, so would make sense to bed him in against Southampton. Biss-Hojbjerg got minutes last week. I like Biss-Benta but wouldn't be surprised if he sticks with Benta-Hojbjerg for this one to avoid too many changes.
Lloris, Doc, Cuti, Dier, Lenglet, Perisic, Bentancur, PEH , Deki, Kane, Son
What’s depressing is that we haven’t upgraded rwb with a player who can come straight in. Spence I hope gets the chance as I really don’t see either Doh or royal tearing down that right wing trying break soton down. Unknown quantity as well. LWB perisic has to start. Sess hasn’t done enough in pre season.Would be fucking typical, the first season since the dawn of man that we get most of our business done before August and then start the new campaign fielding ZERO new signings...
I guarantee if this happens the first 45/60 minutes will be a slog and we will be at 0-0, maybe 0-1, before making 5 changes and winning by 2 clear goals. Bet your house on it!
Time to talk about our first competitive fixture of the season. As we all know, this is one of the matches we lost last season and a game where they pretty much ran rings around us:
I hope for so much this season and step one has to be better results against the teams who beat us last time around. In some ways, it's good that we have the opportunity to get this one out of our system early doors which will hopefully prepare us for the big one against Chelsea (We've got to get better results against that lot this season - four defeats and no goals scored is completely unacceptable).

I think we'll see Perisic, Doherty and then either Lenglet or Davies. Thought Lenglet was definitely a positive to take from yesterday's game.I think it will be more or less the same first XI from last season for this game, Bissouma isn't ready after COVID and Skipp hasn't played the last two games with a knock. It's really only the wing back positions and the LCB position that are question marks. Doherty and Perisic are lacking fitness after injuries but there is another week to train and get ready, same for Davies.

I think the 5 subs is a factor too. Means he can start Perisic and Doherty even if he thinks they are only good for 70 minutes.I think we'll see Perisic, Doherty and then either Lenglet or Davies. Thought Lenglet was definitely a positive to take from yesterday's game.
That’s the big plus for me - our increased depth and that we can make changes without weakening the team.I think the 5 subs is a factor too. Means he can start Perisic and Doherty even if he thinks they are only good for 70 minutes.
We got better results against both Man City and Liverpool last season so there is no reason why we shouldn't be more competitive against Chelsea. In all four games against them, we played like we were Norwich City and that's not good enough. Our first few fixtures aren't as easy as they may look on paper and any points from the Chelsea game will be unexpected and a bonus; so getting points early doors will be crucial. JWP is the threat. Don't give away set pieces

May I ask how you felt in the summer of 88 when we signed Paul Gascoigne? I know 87/88 was a complete washout (the fact that very few video highlights from that season exist today is testament to that) but surely the signing of such a gifted young player must have done something to make you feel the club was heading in the right direction?Definitely the case in the last 20 or so; too depressing to think that I have to go back to when I started supporting us in the late Sixties!![]()
Yes, that was a good start to the season, he was a real star signing. Also, when we signed the lovely Daveed, that was pretty excitingMay I ask how you felt in the summer of 88 when we signed Paul Gascoigne? A shame cos I think our starting line up will be Benta/PEH. Bissouma doesn't seem ready. We all know Hojbjerg will start.
whether people want him to or not. Played 90 in most pre season games as Bissouma & Bentancur have rotated around him.
Richarlison is suspended for the first game,.A shame cos I think our starting line up will be Benta/PEH. Bissouma doesn't seem ready.
Doesn't bode well for DJ Ed either.
So of our new signings only one likely to start is Perisic (which tbf is a big deal), and maybe Lenglet. Lenget against a hard pressing side like Southamton isn't bad.
Richalison looked good in pre-season, if not a revelation, so we should at least have a strong bench against them.
