Do you know why it wasn't the risk you think . The year in Turkey you COULD see it. The anticipation and athleticism against oponents some of who were still good enough to do a job in this country. Everything is a risk and there are no sure bets but the lad was a young Korean with all the discipline and good attitude that culture mandates he was as close to sure as you can get.But was he?
With due respect, you absolutely did call it right but I don’t think there’s such a thing as can’t miss when you’re talking about a guy who has never played above Chinese Super League standard except for one year in Turkey.
I think we’d both agree that we should extend our net further than Italy, France and Iberia (which seem to be our only source of targets) but transition from lower leagues is even harder to predict and we don’t seem to predict well regardless of where we recruit from.
If we wait too long, we’ll get out-bid or out- ‘branded’ by bigger clubs. If we jump in too early, we as likely as not to be ‘N’Jie’d’. Having said that, there are a number of clubs in a similar position, like Dortmund, who seem to do it far better than we do.
Look at the player holistically and be less hung up on the league. I said this before to make it in the EPL you need technique physicality and good speed. A player with all three then it's a matter of coaching and attitude. I never saw N'jie but I had read and seen enough of the Korean to be sure. With Son in the team Spurs had an inside line it's a shocking failure.
