I hate this so much... It's an attitude that's also really pervasive amongst a lot of Man Utd and Woolwich fans. They feel like because they happen to support a team that's won more than most, they somehow hold some kind of superior position in any football debate they have. Like they won the trophies themselves.

The truth is many of them cynically chose the team that was winning at the time to throw their weight behind. Meaning their support probably means less.

And have never been to a game in their lives.

They badly want a yes man puppet. Could have just kept Poch till next season and got Southgate when he leaves the England job.
I honestly think that they believe they can follow the NFL template, where you just get in players that ONLY play in a specific role, then it's up to the coach to drill them on the playbook.

The whole scenario strikes me as an arrogant presumption that their way is the best way to go about it. It shows a total lack of understanding, or arrogant disdain, for the dynamics of the way Football is played.

Look at the way they've gone out an bought what they believe are the best young talents available, it's almost like they've treated them as college drafts.

Again, long may it continue.

These kids must be stupid. But it is exactly as someone here said, an NFL draft model picked by agents with the coach merely a functionary to the preexisting vision. IT WILL NOT WORK. One of the odd alchemical things about football is how sides that dominate become the embodiment of the of the man who builds them:Arrigo sacchi Milan, Rinus michels, Ajax, Alex Ferguson Manchester United.

I'm glad McKenna signed a new contract with Ipswich... He deserves a shot at the PL with the team he took there...

PLUS it keeps him as an option if WE need a coach in a year or so...

He's got Tottenham or Man Utd written ALL over him!

Very nice to see ambition and loyalty locked together. Kudos to him...hope they do well....

I find it hard to believe he was actually allowed to write a thesis about that.

If he was, then football’s finished.
To be fair, the majority of sports we watch have some basis in warfare. Chess was invented to train in tactical thinking for the purposes of warfare. It's all about strategy, so chess isn't as far removed from Football as you'd think.

Yeah I guess but it just makes the game too robotic for me. Players need to be able to make their own decisions and improvise as well.

It just gets too predictable for me otherwise.

You won't find me disagreeing with you there. All I'm saying is that the majority of sports were derived as essentially training for soldiers. Virtually every original Olympic sport evolved from warfare. Javelin, Discus, long/high jump, sprints and distance running were all training exercises for the warriors of the time. I think even gymnastics evolved from this, where warriors practiced leaping, jumping etc so they could get over shield walls or even fortifications.

I believe Basketball evolved from a game that Incan and Aztec warriors used to play millennia ago, it's even postulated that Football evolved from that too, as they weren't allowed to use their hands to put the ball through a hoop or goal.

Fuck knows about Golf though!

Mind you, nothing like a round of Golf to put you in a berserker frenzy!
