How many youngsters have the club given away that have gone on to look like they would have been good enough to play for us all along? Maybe Marcus Edward’s would get a squad place
Meanwhile we have bought an incredible group of youngsters in Vuskovic, Gray, Bergvall, Odobert who look like they will be in this side for years to come
Edwards and KWP stand out as the two that couldn't have been worse than the succession of players who've come and gone since their time with us, Cirkin as well perhaps could have been adequate too but think his leaving was more due to personal reasons tbf.
The young players signed is interesting, as it's exciting yes, but they're clearly given preference over academy players of the same age, and so at some point you wonder if it is going to deter younger players from joining the academy as not only is the pathway to first team being blocked, it's being blocked for an even longer time by young signings.
The Spence omission from EL continues to baffle me. If Forster is going to sit on the bench in Europa then it was pointless, if we are wanting to rest Vicario then realistically one of the other two should be capable of getting us through the group, else they have no business being at the club, they're 25 now not children, and even if the intention is to play Forster then it would be less baffling to leave out Vicario for the time being.
This was a good opportunity to get Spence minutes, rest Porro or Udogie for a player who may have some longer term value to us.
If Spence's attitude hasn't flared up again leading to this, then I'd say the chances of it doing so now have increased significantly, and I'd be understanding of it if so tbh, this must be pretty demoralising for a young player who's tried to knuckle down and been given some encouragement, only to then have this opportunity snatched away in favour of a past it journeyman keeper.
