I think they turn up, sit about in the green room for a bit and drink a coffee then go live and wing it. They aren’t sat in a dark room with a hood over their heads and a gun to the head being told exactly what to say. It’s not that deep mate. It’s a few middle aged blokes talking shite about a game of football.
The turn up, they get some research and editorial notes given to them and then go through the broadcast running order and key editorial lines for the game.
Nobody tells them what to say but they are guided by the research on both teams that’s done for them. Then during the game they will either ask for certain clips to be cut so they can talk/analyse them or just wait to see what the producer chooses for them.
