Player Dominic Solanke

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I'm very happy with Solanke up top putting himself about. He is making us a more complete team with good goal distribution.

As the leagues top scorers we don't boast any player in the leagues top 10 scorers oddly. This imo is largely due to players like Solanke putting the team first which is great to see.

Being a threat from several players is far harder to setup against than putting 2 players on a Son or Kane.

But not all players in all positions need to run the same amount.
The striker does because he's leading the press.
And not all teams are built with the purpose of running and pressing so much.
Ours is, it's the whole fucking point.
And then there are also players who are great at running but less so at other things.
Luckily for us Solanke is great at both running and other things.
And then there are also those who are great at those other things but not so much at running.
Which doesn't apply to him. It's never been an issue for him and I don't know why that troubled you.

Very surprised to see people being happy with him getting ten goals this season.

For the money we spent and as he’s playing in an attacking side, I’m expecting a lot more than that.

Yes, there’s more to his play than just scoring, but he still needs to be our leading scorer.
He really doesn't mate. That's like saying Firminho should have been Liverpool's top scorer because he played as the 9.

If his work rate and all round play is contributing to the team scoring more goals, then he's paid that £65M back in spades.

You also have to look at what he does from a defensive point of view in his role. I'm not talking about when he's in our box, I'm talking about when he's in their half. His second goal was directly related to the work he did chasing the ball down to force the errant pass that Sarr picked off. He then battled his way into the box to finish the chance off. That kind of tenacity is as important, if not more, as his goal tally.

As far as I'm concerned, bringing Solanke in is one of the best bits of business we've done in years.

Surely now no one can still believe we should have gone for Toney. Solankes work rate and pressing is exactly what this team with this style needs. The right player was signed.

I really rate Solanke. In fact, I was calling for us to sign him as long ago as December last year.

But, he does need to justify his price in more than pressing and hard work. Great to see him score twice yesterday and I expect a lot more goals as the season progresses.

Unfortunately, using Firminho as a similar case falls on deaf ears with me as I never rated him at all.

Not really, no. He does his job (which is what he is doing) then we'll carry on creating lots of chances and goals will come, and likely be spread around the team, which they currently are being. He'll bang in at least 15 anyway, and probably more, I have no doubt about that. But he's more than justiying his purchase at the moment.

Yet we are the league’s top scorers

I think he does. You don’t. That’s fine.

I want our centre forward to score plenty of goals. That’s his main job in my opinion.

That beautiful little chip for his first goal yesterday was just so skilled, he delayed his touch just a few milliseconds to pop the thing up and over the goalkeeper and most of all, kept his nerve ensuring he didn’t compromise his timing. Any player who demonstrates that level of skill and presence deserves to be supported totally, it’s up to the manager and coaches to provide an environment on the field where those skills can be utilised effectively.

Yeah, his two goals yesterday have made a big difference in his Goals per 90 min.

I think he will pick up goals. He is 0.6 goals per 90 mins right now which is exactly what he had last year at the end of the season with his 19.

4 goals in 8 games.

Anything less than 15 PL goals would be a disappointing return given the outlay and the fact that he is playing for the league's top scorers.

Really like what I've seen so far but I think he needs a goal against the big boys (City, Liverpool, Woolwich) to truly announce himself.

People still rate Toney/Watkins over him.

what if he got 14?

I don't get the arbitrary figures and why make such an extreme good/bad argument.

If his influence gets us top 4 and/or maybe a trophy then how can you judge his contribution on goals and why would you? Seems a bit of a weird way to analyse that.

I remember Drogba getting 10 goals for Chelsea in his first season and got criticised regularly then they won the league...no one was calling him a waste of money after that...

It’s not really arbitrary though. A good season is what, 85-105 goals? Bottom end gets top four, top end wins the league.

Main striker gets around 20-25. Other attackers 10-15 each, maybe two of them. Another few midfielders post 7-10 each. Defensive players a couple each. The top end of these figures gets us 105 goals.

Obviously not an exact science, but around 20 goals for a centre forward isn’t just plucked out of the sky.
