I don't think AVB is a fair comparison at all. He literally had a prime Gareth Bale in his first season and did no better than Ange managed. Opinions on Ange last year would've been much harsher if we still had Harry Kane running around.
Posted in the other thread, but AVB's season after selling Bale he had a much cheaper squad and had 3 more points when he was sacked after 15 matches in December than Ange has now after 21 matches.

AVB was unequivocally better than Ange, without Bale.

Ange has been a complete disaster since October 2023. He's far out of his depth. He lost to Palace and Ipswich with health squads.

It's either your anal cyst or it's Brendan Rogers.

Whilst I genuinely don't think we'll get relegated, we could come perilously close like Everton have done in the past few years....
Thing is, do we have the stomach for THAT kinda fight?

Gimme mid table mediocrity tomorrow!!

And lieutenants lead infantry platoons.

Titles don't make leaders. Titles make bosses. Leaders lead even without titles. The idea that players really care who has the arm band (other than personal pride) is ridiculously naive.

We have a leadership crisis, but it's not a result of Son having the armband. We have poor leadership, starting in the dugout and extending to the pitch where we don't have any players embarrassed by being mid table.
i hear what youre saying but the captain does matter in football. son having the armband is an instant sign of weakness and being a soft touch. yes, others can step up and be leaders, i think bergvall looks to have that sort of personality but hes probably at least a couple years off being comfortable enough to start leading players that are almost a decade older than him.

i dont know if youve ever played football but if youve ever played in a game where the standard is half decent and it is a tough game it can come down to who wants it more, thats when having alpha males in the side can get you over the line. we have a team that has far too many meek tarts who dont want to get hurt.

giving son the armband was an horrendous decision and i bet it was deflating for some of the players, they of course wont say it publicly but it sets us up to be a soft touch and thats exactly what we are.

i would of given it to romero even if he cant speak a word of english, he would at least lead by example when the going gets tough. the current captain is a 50-50 dodger FFS!

AVB nostalgia now then is it?

Fuck me we deserve it don't we?
It's not nostalgia, I've said as much since he was sacked (I'm nothing if not consistent).

AVB was sacked because he couldn't get the squad onside - but its grossly exaggerated that the football was horrid (more goals per game than Poch) or that results were horrid (more points per game than his predecessor and very nearly the same as his replacement who has apparently been knighted by Spurs supporters).

I know but that is the position we are in. We are at Everton next, who are 5th from bottom and just 1 point above relegation places. Everton are winless in last 6 scoring just 1 goal. After that it is second from bottom Leicester who have lost last 6.

We need 4 points from these 2 games. Anything less and we are properly in the relegation mix. I don’t see a change with Big Ange before then. If we pick up 4 points, we’re probably safe from relegation. He’s more or less up to the return leg against Liverpool then and could well limp on to the end of the season

If things go badly against Everton and Leicester, he surely gets sacked, even if Mason is the short-term alternative.
Matt Wells is second in command

Lose to Everton and we are right in the mire.
What concerns me is we have no leaders. No one who goes round geeing up the team, getting on the ref's back, winding up the opposition etc
Many on here will recall the relegation season in the 70's. At least we had fighters then - Stevie P, Pratt for example. I remember them leaving the field in tears at Villa when we were almost down. Seen none of that from the current bunch.
We still went down though. Still remember coming back from 2-0 down at half time at Old Trafford, only to win 3-2 with 2 from the late Ian Moores and a winner from John Pratt, 20 yard volley.
Terry Naylor liked a fight, VAR would kill him now.

Another view of all this is that the players are pissed off having to run around like nutcases playing schoolyard football. While the coach stands on the side shaking his head and putting his head in his hands.
Not acceptable, it certainly isn’t Ange!!!
For some reason a lot of people are convinced that this will click eventually, while there is absolutely no e vidence that it will.
Only one yr left of his contract in the summer. Relatively cheap to get rid.

It’s not nostalgia. AvB was an odd character that obviously rubbed certain people in the club the wrong way. He also joined us when fans probably did have delusions of grandeur.

The football was dour but he was, at worst, a competent manager that would even have enjoyed some success at a more ambitious club.

Ange is basically Tim Sherwood but there’s no gilet that fits him.
