Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

We entered this season with effectively 17 senior outfield players. The lowest for a number of seasons.
At a time when EL games increased and the amount of injury time played has grown significantly too.

On paper you need more players. But we started with less than usual!!

Why?

Ange’s choice?
Decision by the people who have been put in charge of football?
Or by the board in a cost cutting exercise?
Well first of all I get to 19 without counting Austin or Reguilon, so not sure of your math.

But then also, Ange sanctioned 65M to be spent on Gray and Odobert, and he's spoken openly particularly in Gray's case about choosing that over spending on more seasoned players because of the potential.

The project has always been to get younger and to build with patience through bringing along young talent. Gray, Bergvall, Odobert, Moore, these guys were supposed to be the squad depth and gain experience as they filled in for the first XI along the way.

Now that doesn't mean we couldn't or shouldn't have added better quality here or there, but the basic shape of the plan has been clear enough.

The problem is that the injury situation has thrown the plan out the window, and the club is doing nothing to keep the Ange ship afloat.

I believe Levy and the board and the new backroom structure is absolutely determined to see this through, bar extreme relegation threat I really think Ange survives and probably starts next season. But he's going to do it at a massive credibility deficit with the fans and the media, and with probably no silverware to show for it, because in a moment of need the club with the most financial flexibility on earth wouldn't lift a finger to help him.

10 players left in the summer and we now have 10 first team players out. We signed 4 18 year olds when we knew we were playing twice a week. This season was always going to be a bigger rebuild than last season.

If we get some players back and avoid relegation and the board makes some serious signings in the summer. I’m talking 3 ready now players aged 23-28. Next season should be a lot better.

You also have to remember that apart from Man City, no other club Has finished top 4 every season. 25 years ago the same 4-5 clubs finished in the top 4 every season. Those days are gone. I think the new norm is expect to finish 4 then 8th then 5th then 10th etc.

This league is way too competitive now and even the small clubs have great managers. Sacking a manager after a bad season is going to become less frequent imo. Clubs will look more at the bigger picture. Perhaps Newcastle should have sacked Eddie Howe last season but that would have been a massive mistake. I see us having a recovery season next year

My optimistic interpretation of this:

We're like a plane whose engine has failed: it seemed ok since we coasted for a bit before losing altitude. Then shit got real. Lange and co. have been working frantically to repair the damage, which is now patched up and sputtering to life. At the moment we are still dropping while we pick up speed for the big hurrah.

Basically, it's going to be like that bit in the movies where you don't think they're going to clear the cliff. The camera cuts to the the view from the top of the cliff, everything is quiet. Too quiet. And then, PHWOOM! The plane nicks the edge of the cliff as it zooms over the top of your head.

The old battered Cessna is Ange and Levy has probably paid to be exec. prod. so he can be the maverick pilot. All the flakes screaming 'we're going to die!' will be listed as 'Flake #1' etc. But they'll be happy they were in it and point it anyone who'll listen forevermore.

While reading this analogy I had to think of the german pilot who commited suicide by crashing the plane into a mountain. He locked himself into the Cockpit the copilot and stewardesses were banging on the door but he didnt open.
In this analogy levy is the pilot ange and co knocking on the door...

My apologies if its not funny im german:)

It’s a great and darkly funny analogy. It’s the pessimist/realist view to my optimist/surrealist one.

Anyone that watched the whole press conference would know that what he meant in relation to being better off, was in terms of the total squad and the depth and also competition for spots. He spoke about the unacceptable position on the table and owned responsibility.

Also, it's not easy to avoid talking about players either injured or suspended, when most of the questions directed at Ange are related to these issues.

I really don't care what people take out of the press conferences, but I am confident that many here don't watch the full presser and just respond to you headlines and click bait.

I think it’s clear as day we are a better club than 18months ago. Sure we are bad in the league. But look at how poor Newcastle were last year, how bad Liverpool were the season they lost just VVD, how poor city have been with a couple of injuries. We’ve basically lost 80% of our starting 11 for a significant period of the season. Couple that with 10 guys leaving in the summer and it’s going to be awful! Football is a game of fine margins. Scrap a draw against Liverpool and then win by a sneaky goal against Newcastle in the final and it’s our best season in 16 years or so

I’m shocked his comments were taken out of context. Absolutely stunned. 😂😂😂😂

There was a bible basher from the US once who come out and said "if the bible said 2+2 was 5, I wouldn't argue with it, I'd go away and find a way to prove it was right"

That right there is the same insane culty logic of Ange and his followers.
Facts just don't matter.
And when facts don't matter to someone anymore, you can't argue with them.

PL squad list taken from their site. Maybe this is out of date?
We named 23 players. 4 goalkeepers. So 19 outfield players. Take off reguilon and Robson I get 17. Reguilon was only there as nobody else wanted him. I don’t even know who max Robson is but we are almost in February and he has played zero minutes in a season we have had an injury crisis.
So I’m not counting those two as senior outfield players Ange could rely upon. They were just names on a sheet of paper.

Each squad contains no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the "Home Grown Player" (HGP) criteria. The rest of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be "Home Grown".

25 Squad players (*Home grown)
1 Austin, Brandon Anthony*
2 Bentancur, Rodrigo
3 Bissouma, Yves
4 Davies, Benjamin Thomas*
5 De Andrade, Richarlison
6 Dragusin, Radu-Matei
7 Forster, Fraser Gerard*
8 Heung-Min, Son
9 Johnson, Brennan Price*
10 Kulusevski, Dejan
11 Maddison, James*
12 Porro Sauceda, Pedro Antonio
13 Reguilon Rodriguez, Sergio
14 Robson, Max*
15 Romero, Cristian Gabriel
16 Sarr, Pape Matar
17 Solanke-Mitchell, Dominic Ayodele*
18 Spence, Diop Djed*
19 Udogie, Iyenoma Destiny
20 Van De Ven, Micky
21 Vicario, Guglielmo
22 Werner, Timo
23 Whiteman, Alfie Malik*

And I don’t buy this project stuff.

Last season Ange was saying his aim this season was to challenge for the league.
This season he reiterated that prior to the Woolwich game.

Anything now stating hey we never wanted/planned to be near the top teams right now is pure revisionist talk.

“This is the project stage!!”

Someone is bullshitting. Maybe Ange is just a salesman for levy peddling cheap goods as something else. But I think he really thought we had enough about us.

There has never been a time we have had this few experienced senior players. It makes no sense in a season we knew we would play more games.
I’m wondering if Ange’s naivety at this level alongside the boards famous Penny pinching tactics have given us this perfect storm.

Our lack of homegrown club trained players is also killing us in Europe.
We can’t currently maximise the 25 man squad depth in that Comp. So we do have to be quite clever with who we loan / buy and leave off the EL squad.

We’ve also culled the squad of overpaid, average players leaving just a few to go - Werner, Bissouma and Johnson.

I do think Ange has to take responsibility for injuries. He didn’t rotate enough until he had to - players like Spence, Gray even Austin should have come in much sooner for Europa League to allow players like VDV, Romero, Vic, Porro and Solanke midweeks off (I know the positions don’t fully line up but it’s just a quick example)

The team is definitely not in a better place than last year.
The team still look under coached, poor in defence and, struggle to keep the ball and find passes to each other.
Performance levels overall are wank, that is with a fully fit squad, Results are the same, apart from the occasional good result it's largely been uninspiring .
Not sure what Tottenham team people are watching, unless it's re-runs of teams of yesteryear.
