I don't think that was the case with Conte or Mourinho, we played more through the middle using counter attacks, we didn't need players like Odobert then, we were more direct and Johnson would have fitted those teams better, in a sort of Lucas Moura role, though I don't think he's as good as Moura who could also dribble and beat his man as part of this attributes sometimes.

Odobert's skill set would fit perfectly in that wide #10 role for Conte. Players that can do that fit in any system.

Son used to struggle with exactly the same things in that system as he does this one. If you play it to him with a man pressing behind and ask him to keep it and play in tight spaces, it's not his biggest strength, the same with Johnson. The only difference under Conte was we used to defend deeper and there were counter attack opportunities in behind more often. But even those dried up once teams learned Conte's passing patterns and knew to press certain players.

Fulham’s net soend over last 5 years is crap. And their wage bill is a lot less than ours.

So on paper we should win this game.

But we played Thursday and these guys heads are not going to be in fight for every point.
Sure at least one player is going to be thinking more about the international break too.

So I’ve voted Fulham win. But hope I’m wrong.

I put win for my vote but it’s one of those intentionally deluded votes because why not,

The truth is, this game has every single one of the perfect conditions for us to lose:

Early KO away from home
Sunday after a EL game
Weekend before an international break
Mid block/deep block team that will wait for the spaces we leave regularly.
Can VDV and Romero play 90m?
How much more focused on EL than PL are we?

IMO winning this would probably be a bigger sign of progress than AZ tbh.

I could not be in more agreement with this.

The difference is Conte was mainly getting us to play counter attack. So when there was a break the likes of Son had more space and wasn't so tightly defended, the same would apply for Johnson in such a system obviously with less skill than Son.

Now during attacks we're trying to walk through a parked bus and it requires mint wingers to do so.

If we had the players I'd be all for using wingers to attack all the time.

Edit if I recall our goals against AZ last week were counter attacking, especially the last one, it wasn't following the Postecoglou playbook.

Tel was signed to play CF but also cover out wide. He is a very similar profile to a young Kolo-Muani or young Isak. Obviously not the same level yet.

I can see why Ange is happy with Johnson, he does what he was signed to do. It’s a disconnect in the fans that expected him to be a 1v1 winger type.

That and him being a lazy fucker that likes to hide!

When it worked but it stopped working eventually and even if we were Top 4 when he started to check out, we were getting dominated tactically every week and the slide down the table was inevitable even if he'd stayed.

I do agree that low block teams it's useful to have 1v1 ability to draw defenders out of position but any and every system can come up against a low block. Teams used to low block Conte at times as well.

the third goal against AZ was as Angeball as we have seen in ages. We played through their press and then found Son who had stayed high and wide, then Spence got forward from FB and sent a low cross which went via a box striker drawing defenders to him and found the opposite winger at the back post. Textbook Ange style goal.

And everyone else who manages football teams, when it suits them

Except that Spence overlapped outside of Son, not inside like Angeball would preach.

It wasn’t Angeball Richard- it was just traditional football.

The players took it upon themselves to win the game and ignored what Ange would have normally had them do.

I put us in for a draw. I don’t really know what will happen this game. Fulham are better coached but have worse talent. I’m guessing a similar result to last week vs Bournemouth.

Its only fulham mate. Used to be routine wins under poch against these. Ange got outclassed last season by silva at the cottage. Exposed the flaws in full backs. I expect to win tomorrow.

I don't see it.

One would love to believe all our players would now be fully charged, seeking to get into the team for the Europa quarter-final.

I would like to think Postecoglou found a way to motivate the players but I see two big reasons why we won't win tomorrow.

The lack of real central back options. Romero should start, but with Davies or Gray, or he gives VDV another 60 minute run out.

Then you have Solanke, who might be rested for Tel, or like VDV be given 60/70 minutes.

Either way, I just think we are still short, and in the summer, if both areas aren't addressed, alongside an absolute need for a midfield general, we will be rinsing and repeating.
