Wouldn't it have been better to let someone else develop him and Gil so Spurs could concentrate on buying the finished article?

I haven't read other posts on this thread, so forgive me, but I agree. All we seem to do is buy cheap young players, and then sell them after failed loan spells, for less than we paid. Last summer, we bought Solanke, and 5 prospects. You don't win anything with prospects, and we never keep our prospects long enough for them to make a difference i.e. contribute with great players around them (coz we don't buy them either).

Whether or not you agree with the strategy, part of buying 5 young players for £20m rather than a Declan Rice for £100m, is you’re working on the basis that 1 or 2 will be a dud that you get nowt back from, 1 or 2 Aren’t successful but you make your money back and the other develop to be £50m+ players - leaving you “financially” up.

If you look at our recruitment over the last 10 years or so we’ve enough examples of the latter* (Walker, Bale, Dele, now maybe Bergvall etc) to see why ENIC are on board with the strategy.

* appreciate we didn’t sell the likes of Dele for anything but he was “worth” £100m ish in his pomp

Be fucking humiliating if he thought this was a step up. But for mug kept telling anyone who would listen he was 80 plus million centerback...yeah that's the past. Look st the sums quoted.
He's clearly a £60m defender in this market, has far too many brain farts in him to ever be classed as one of the best, on the back of his absence and poor performances this season it's no surprise to me that it's the "wrong" Madrid club who want him, and the likes of Villa rather than City seeing him as a solution to their defensive issues as they are.

He needs a run of consistent games. Got injured with us and he was in the shoots of getting in his stride. He needs a good full season and run of games. Tbh will he pissed off if we sold. Needs a year loan somewhere. Southampton next season or qpr. Abroad someone like rayo vallecano.

He's not starting currently at a relegation level team, not sure sending him to a top half La Liga team is a good idea. I think he might need to go to slightly weaker league, bit negligible that the club left him to struggle at Espanyol rather than recalling and sending somewhere else in Jan.
