The last minute deadline day swoop for such a well-known and entertaining player out of absolutely nowhere was a product of a different era of the football business and about as fan-pleasing of a move as you could imagine. But the reality is we've made many much bigger transfers in the years since.
Star name flair players are still out there to be had of course. Buyer beware.
Absolutely true, but that was also true of Van Der Vaart. Both he and Lucas were tipped for superstardom as teenagers.I guess…kinda? I feel like when we signed Lucas he was viewed as a player who had failed to live up to the hype.
It's a product of the progress of both the league and the club that acquiring a player like that was more novel and exciting in 2010 than 2018.
