Player Ben Davies

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Not at all surprised by this.

I don't want to cunt off Davies he's been an excellent servant to the club, he has his qualities and he's a decent bloke.

But he's limited, we all know this. With Romero and VDV out so much last season he played a hand in plenty of those shocking defeats.

If we were a serious football club (which we're not) with designs on the top this guy would not still be at this football club in 2025. Let alone getting extended.

I'm not even having this "he's a decent squad player" stuff anymore.

If you seriously want to challenge the top of the league your squad players need to be challenging to get into the first eleven and need to up there with the first 11. Not just "well he's reliable he will do a job"

He's ever been a mid table player

Just hope he won't take any of the CL squad slots.

For PL extra body is not a problem and i get experience and vibes part - but in Europe all our HG (except CT) slots are already occupied (Solanke, Johnson, Madison, Spence) .

I’m completely on board with an extension for Benny. He’s unlikely to play too often but when he does you have to believe he will be adequate in a system that doesn’t require defenders to be able to run a hundred miles an hour every time we lose the ball.

If he has been signed in order to get a fee for him then that’s fair enough also.

Think Davies adds depth but more importantly he's been there for pretty much every new manager and has featured heavily starting with the Mourinho era. No doubt he's physically not at his peak but I don't think there's a player that can adapt to a system better than him in in our squad (as long as that doesn't involve 30 yard sprints). Especially if Frank comes in with an occasional 5 at the back you couldn't really ask for a better 3rd choice left back/6th choice centre back.

Extending the contract doesn’t even guarantee he stays. Depending on how the window shakes out we may still move him on this summer.

Those bed-wetting over this extension need to relax. In the last 2 years we have lost almost all the PL experience from our squad and it’s seen us drop to 17th in the table. No harm in potentially keeping a model pro and club man around.

Fans approve this type of shit because "great servant" and then complain that standards at the club are low and we don't prioritise winning.

Other way to look at it is. He's liked and fits in well with the squad.

He covers LB and CB if needed.

Not on huge wages.

Why spend millions on another backup when you have one already that fits all of the above?

No it doesn't. It just means he's valued as a senior pro; even though he won't play much.
I hear this every year, yet a backup is still expected to make around 20 appearances a season. Some of these will definitely be in key games, derbies, cup knockout games etc. I’m a big fan of Bens career with us, but last season was the time to bow out. He was poor when called upon in the second half of last season. His status as a “senior pro” did nothing to arrest our league slump and teams were licking their lips when up against him.

At no point last season was he our #1 back up and he'll start the season even further down the pecking order than he was this season.

Our defensive injuries were crazy last season....... Yet it would have only been an even worse picture without him.
