This is the crux. Those two were both decent players and got slated by our fans for being poor.
I’ve got Norwich supporting friends and family. Norfolk is almost like my second home. Skipp bossed that league. They were gutted when he left.
Winks had a horrible injury and was never really the same player.
Josh Onomah is the other side of that “keep players here” coin. What did we get for him? What did he do for our team? Did you love seeing him play?
He didn't play though, so I don't think really applies to the point I was making.
Just keeping them here to train and watch from the stands, yes, absolutely pointless.
So if the choice is between playing a youngster, who doesn't do anything amazing for the season but costs nothing in fee and is on low wages, allowing us to focus our funds on the most key areas of weakness, and eventually likely to pull in a decent fee on the back of the experience, or signing someone mildly better, but also doesn't really move the needle over the course of the season, at the cost of ~£20m - £30m, and a hefty wage, then the youngster is a more attractive proposition.
They're not the only two scenarios obviously, but it's what we've come to expect from our club's transfer dealings.
Right now, apparently we are looking to loan out Vuskovic, and yet are still also apparently looking to bring in another cb. Are we bringing someone in to challenge Romero and VDV? Unlikely, so are we going to spend another £25m on a Danso like backup? It's baffling.
We currently have no "10", but some have pointed out how foolish it could be to go out and spend the £40m - £60m you'd need to get an established player in that position when those injured will eventually return. If not now, then when will be the opportune moment to give Donley some minutes.
He could go to Stoke and ride the bench all season, and some would use that as confirmation he wouldn't have contributed much here, but it's just not that simple.
Kane had plenty of rubbish loans, became elite here though when he got his chance.
So much of a youngster breaking out comes down to simple luck, right place at the right time. We seem to ignore those moments and prefer to spend our money on average dross from elsewhere, which is strange considering the supposed thriftiness of our owners.
