Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Barring any catastrophies, Spence will be going to the WC IMO. Whether he goes there as a starter or backup remains to be seen, but he's taken his call up opportunities with both hands. What I think makes him a shoe in is his versatility too, as he's rock solid, defensively, whether he plays right or left

Seriously its hillarous how its taken this long for so many to see what's infront of them. If nothing else it fully supports a total purge of the back room from a coaching side of the club. We wasted nearly 18 months of improving a top 5 percentile players development because not sure what the excuse is now...plaits blackness Islam time keeping .

He should be BETTER than he is if we hadn't flexed like a working mens club in Wombwell as opposed to an elite EPL side. Id buy a leftback (Antione Robinson) ASAP and get on with turning Spence into our best RB since Walker prime. He is NOT there but he can be and that's bloodly rare. Look at Kerkez and Ait Nori he cooks both of them.

Agree fully. Genuinely embarrassing how some of us got dug out on here for showing support for Spence back on. A lot of fun could be had with the receipts in this thread alone.

Porro is a really good player, but turning Spence into a world class fullback, especially as an English club presumably desiring to feature at least some local English players, should be a no brainer. Spence should earn it from Porro of course, but the club should at least have plans in mind if/when that happens.

What is truly comical is the period when we were rotating Porro and Emerson Royal while Spence went on loan.

Some of the decisions at Spurs have been unbelievable.

That was very much Conte though, freezing him out and sending him to Rennes. Ange totally responsible for doing him over until he had no choice though.

Though TBF, Spence went to Leeds in the championship and didn't do great, and Genoa turned down the option to buy him for like £8m.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to suggest that we didn't have "this" Spence at the club for the first 2 years. Sounds like he had a bit of a mental aspect to sort out

I saw him playing for Forest before he came to Spurs.

I was also at Coventry away the night he got us back into the game when Ange reluctantly had no choice but to play him.

Spence was treated apallingly during his first two seasons at Spurs.

Conte wanted a different player and made his feelings public.

I personally don't buy that Spence had a bad attitude or mental problem.

The problem he had was getting game time at Spurs.

The two people who were mainly responsible for that are no longer here.

Thankfully.

So Conte wasn't part of the problem?

He said that Spence was a "club buy," so if Levy was held responsible for buying him, as you often point out for any player that fails, then how is he the problem here? He sanctioned the buying of a player that we now believe has WC ability, it was the managers who refused to play him.

Couple that with his inability to make an impact at any of his loan clubs and, whether you buy it or not, it points to Spence as being the common denominator. As has been pointed out countless times on here, different players mature at different rates, both physically and mentally.

What we should celebrate is the fact that it is Spence who has turned it all around. Despite his numerous setbacks, he's come back stronger and better, forcing himself into the reckoning for a WC berth and owning any winger, right or left, that comes at him.

Forget what's happened in the past, that's a fools errand. What we have now is a monster of a fullback/wingback who is only just now coming into his prime, and, personally, I'm loving it.

Spence flopped at every club he was loaned out to and 3 head-coaches at Spurs did not play him...so I don't think you can blame the coaching staff for his late development. Even Ange was ready to let him go...and then Spence, for whatever reason, had a change of attitude.

Do you blame Levy for everything in your life, out of interest?

No.

The man who appointed Conte was the problem.

Conte was open regarding his feelings about the signing of Spence.

He called it a club signing and wasn't disrespectful about the player.

Farque gave Marcus Edwards a similar experience when he took him on loan at Norwich.

Levy never learned from his own mistakes.

So glad he has been canned

So many “professional” evaluators are either shit or they have other interests.

It happens at all levels.

I know a kid that played for a mediocre / poor youth academy who was played as a left back and often sat the bench in favor of a piss poor kid. He went to a top academy and is the starting number 10 now, contributing with a lot of goals and assists.

So Conte WAS a problem? Make your mind up.
Conte was open regarding his feelings about the signing of Spence.
And stymied his development. Just because he wasn't HIS choice he refused to play him. As we're seeing now, Spence has talent in abundance. You don't think Conte refusing to see this, due to petulance over him not asking for him, isn't a problem?

Yegods!

He wasn't? Refusing to give him an opportunity is giving him due respect?

You don't half have a blind spot here for all to see

Huh? That doesn't make Conte any less culpable.

And there's the blind spot.

For such a little man, you seem to have an awful lot of trouble seeing past him.

No surprise to see who you’re debating with! 😂

I have the brain donor on ignore and life is soooooo much better as a result! 😁

I reckon he really has a secret Levy crush he’s so obsessed with him!

💯

It's like you've always said: not only do we have Ange to thank for this:

But we also have him to thank for helping Djed break through into our first team squad.

Your love for Ange knows no bounds. Kudos 😍

Nah.

I saw through Levy around 2004.

Conte is a winner.

He could never have worked with Levy's bullshit.

Hence Nuno for a handful of games first.

Conte was never the problem. He wouldn't compromise and he wouldn't allow Levy to compromise what he wanted.

Can't believe how far some will still go to defend the miser tbh.

Even now.

Let's come back to what was originally being debated here, rather than go off on that Levy tangent you seem to want to take everything down.

The question was whether Conte was a problem in relation to Spence's development. It's not rocket science. He refused to play a young man with, as we're seeing now, enormous potential.

You see Conte completely missing that or worse, completely ignoring it, as absolutely fine?

Bear in mind we are ONLY talking about Conte in relation to Spence here, nothing else.

We are in the Djed Spence thread after all, so maybe try to keep it on topic?
