Transfers The Winter Transfer Thread - 25/26

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He’s not amazing at it. Defence is his weakest area. But he’s does do it. People make out he doesn’t move off the ball and it isn’t true.

It’s a side he can/should develop, which is what Carrick had to do.

Wharton has elements you can’t coach or improve easily at all. That level of passing range and someone so hard to press is absolute gold dust.
Whilst I'd choose Anderson over Wharton personally, there's a lot of truth in this post.

It's very easy to forget that Wharton is only 21 years old, he's still developing his game as a midfielder.

I can remember when Carrick joined us, he still had a lot of rough edges, which were polished whilst he played for us. It was when he'd done that, and started to look really good for us, that Utd then swooped in and took him as basically a finished product.

Wharton is pretty much following the same kind of trajectory, only I'd say his passing range is probably better than Carrick's was, even at this early stage of his career.

Whilst I'd honestly prefer Anderson, I'd not be unhappy if we got Wharton, as I honestly think he'd develop into a superb playmaker.

We'd just have to stay patient with him as fans, as I don't think he'd start to justify the transfer outlay immediately, but would develop into an elite midfielder.

No, the priority is a striker and a central midfielder. Mostly it's a leader or 2.

This obsession with wingers is baffling.
We just signed a leader in Gallagher and Wharton with him would have a great balance. I do like Anderson more as he’s more aggression in his game but can play all types of passes.
100% we need a centre forward. I think we should go get Vlahovic and we then have that focal point up top. He’s out of contract in the summer and money won’t be an issue. Again the big question is would any of these players actually come to us.

Also have to remember how poor Carrick was defending space. There was a good reason England worried about using him. Oddly after he went United they must have gone mental on his coaching as within about two years he went from being shit at covering the backline to being quite good at it.

Wharton can definitely improve defensively but I don’t think he is quite as bad as Carrick was. It’s also a point that if Carrick can significantly improve his defending then Wharton probably can as well.

Anderson is the all round but Wharton is a very good player. Put him next a physical beast like Gallagher and it would help a lot.
Carrick was so bad at defending space that we conceded about 25 more goals the next season after he left and we replaced him with Zokora.

Clearly not

Only 39, estimated value €500k

Absolute no brainer.

Thing is, Carrick cost us 3.5m not tbe &0 that Wharton would cost. You need a more complete player for that sort of money.

I do get the reservation on Wharton.

In a better team, with the pitch opened up - with more defensive responsibility - I think there are valid concerns.

He's an absolute magician on the ball, spectacular, and you can imagine how exciting he could be in a more attacking, expansive team

But... How much do you need to accomodate him? How much of a liability is he at the back?

I dont know. I do know Palace sit back, sit compact, and he always has bodies around him doing a lot of that work for him - its a very different set up that at a top 6 club.

So I understand concerns, things is we'll never know until he moves
Palace is a more attacking expansive team than us.

Carrick just wasn’t getting a look in with Santini wasn’t it. He came on against Charlton at home for his first minutes and was brilliant, changed the game. He was really good for us pretty much from that day. We just became better as a team and he started to get more recognition.
