Apparently when we signed him for big money from Wolfsburg the general consensus in Germany was one of surprise. Think he was seen as a promising prospect but not some 40m quid star in the making.
Then he comes in and looks like an absolute world-beater cos he's amazing in a high-line system and is making these eye-catching interceptions and tackles every week. And tbf - he's about as good at anyone at that specific side of the game.
As you say, he's a below average penalty box defender, though - crap in the air and not great at anticipating danger. Basically awful for our current predicament, alongside the aloof Romero who is decent in the air but far too casual and also liable to brain-farts and losing his man.
Ironically, Vuskovic would've actually been ideal for this type of defending - seemingly one of the best penalty box defenders in Europe right now.

People were fooled by sexy recovery pace. The guys an unreal athlete who is very fun to watch in his stride and yeah if we’re dominant and pressing high he’s very good.
He’s very incomplete though, and hasn’t improved at this. Box defending poor, aerially not great, seems to lose focus a lot. You expect this from young defenders but I’ve not see him develop it much.
He’s also not half as good in possession as someone like Jan.
No he's not. He's very average at doing what a central defender did, but his blistering pace bailed him out of trouble and it looks good. He's a bang average defender blessed with exceptional straight line speed.

They think Van De Ven is a top player. Not a chance.
We will be stuck with him unless a top team needs a left back. Quality central defender he really isn't, as those who know their football would recognise.
Tbf even with his issues and a shite couple of months he's still currently the highest rated player this season across the match threads. He was really decent in the first few months of the season and I think the backlash has swung a bit too far. People are talking like he's genuinely shit.

It's not just his performances though.
He's really not come across well off the pitch this season either.
It's fine to have a bit of an attitude when you're performing well. When you're actively helping us lose games, it makes you seem a bit of a prick.
Yeah his attitude hasn't been great but that's a different thing. I think ignoring Frank was really poor but I think a lot of the other stuff is just him feeling the pressure and being really frustrated by the whole situation and then that bleeding into his performances.
The Palace mistake was more down to him caring too much rather than not enough, I think. He was the captain and felt he had to do something but went too far due to the extreme pressure of the situation. If you listen to his interview with the Dutch journo it seems like he's just being crushed under the weight of our collective failure.
Could well be but that's even more damning.
He plays for a massive football club in the most watched league in the world. There will always be pressure. Call me old fashioned but I want my players to thrive under adversity.
Regardless of the reasons, his PR machine this season has been as off-kilter as our form.
