Frankie De Jong from Barca might be worth a look. Doesn't really get a game for them and would definitely improve our midfield. Not sure if he's had injury issues though. Might be gettable for about 40-50mil.
He played when he was available. Had a bad injury, and with them so far ahead in the league, eased him back in. He's going nowhere unfortunately. The prototype of what we need though. Kees Smit is his successor, just said they should go to AZ, and him, with blank cheques.

You definitely can force a player to play if he's got long enough on his contract. Look at Kane and Modric. All the player can do is go on strike but if the club digs in and refuses to let them leave they'll normally settle down and reintegrate into the squad. Think Vuskovic will stay if he's got long enough on his contract. Not sure how long he signed for and how long he's got left?
We got one more contentious year out of Modric and, thankfully, forced him out of the clutches of Chelsea.

The kid is signed through 2030 We’ll be able to keep him through 2028 at least 2029 if we’re prepared to take a hit on his value.
By extending the loan now, we lose 2026/27. Might be worth it if we can extend the contract to 2033 or so. However, if he were to push for a move at the end of 2028 then we’ll still only get one more season out of him regardless of his contract length. You just can’t hold players that are dead set on a move — you can only increase the price paid if the contract is long enough. I really don’t want to lose next season unless we get in a like-for-like CB if Romero goes. Stones ain’t it and whoever comes will be cognizant of Vuskovic behind him.

Yeah our midfield is shite.

We need players at Maddison level and above instead of hoarding mediocre players

None of our current lot walk into any top ten side
On an individual level they aren’t terrible but the lack of balance & chemistry because Lange insisted on filling the squad with the same type of player about 7 times, means they look infinitely worse.

Bentancur Is our best passer in that area but he should be the floor, not the ceiling. This is our biggest defect and it maddens me that it’s not been addressed for 3 straight years.

No one knew who Kroupi was before this season.
The problem is that our scouting system identify Odobert and Tel for a combined 65m while Bmouth find Kroupi for 10m.

Every year there is another Kroupi. The club should be able to find these players.
They should be, but it is important to understand that the mere fact of Tottenham registering interest raises the price to what we "can" pay.

One of many ways in which looking to the likes of Bournemouth for inspiration has to take into account that for Bournemouth finishing 6th is a massive success.

It's not just "do the same thing with more money", competing for top honors is a different ballgame in many ways.

Think he's better than what we've got, has experience of playing for a winning team and from what I've seen of his has similar qualities to Declan Rice which is just what we need. Casemiro did a job for Utd in the later part of his career and think de jong could do similar for us imo of course.
He’s flaky and injury prone and he’d be taking a step down.

He won’t have the hunger to do well for us.

I’ve got no Patience for the De Jong’s of the world.

Rice is 10x the athlete and defensive player, and more importantly was coming into his peak.

“He’ll do a job” is exactly why we are in this position. We need proper long term solutions who have the desire to do well for us.

We beat Casemiro to win a trophy so….

Never mind that, we've never replaced Dembélé, that's 6.5 years now. We haven't had a midfielder that can dominate the middle of the park, instead, we get athletes. Be that a passer or someone that can retain the ball, we've not had that player for a long time.

The difference being is that we’d stand a far stronger chance than Bournemouth at keeping our gems (see the Poch era) whilst also having the opportunity to add more established talent on top of that because of the potential of Spurs compared to Bournemouth..

Given the West Ham are skint, I would take Mateus Fernandes off of their hands for the DM role.

Bentancur-Hojbjerg axis Was good under Conte.

Wanyama was an underrated part of that midfield, he was just a press resistant as Dembele as well as being an elite ball winner.

Modric-Huddlestone is probably my favourite midfield axis just because the first instinct was to think it couldn’t work in the prem.

But that's part of it, right?

A Bournemouth is able to run such a robust recruitment operation because they're always selling their assets at peak value and always have the availability for bigger roles in the team as they churn through players. The more you buy the more hits you get, and when you always sell at top value you don't have to worry about fluctuations in form.

For instance, Brighton doesn't run into the problem of keeping Yves Bissouma and watching him decline instead of buying Moises Caicedo. Keeping your best players isn't always the correct move.

It's impressive what those clubs have done, there's no question. But it is both easier and very, very different than trying to win the league at a top club.

Apparently off to Man Utd.

My list is:

Adam Wharton (would require a real aggressive move)

Angelo Stiller of Stuttgart - he’s got a face that only a mother would love, and that’s the reason why he hasn’t moved yet IMO.

Hayden Hackney - surely someone gives him a shot in the prem.

Manuel Locatelli - No CL for Juve, De Zerbi could convince him possibly ?

That duo was fine. But we've not had a proper class midfield since those Wanyama and Dembélé days. It should be the priority position this year and everything else will look easier.

On Dembélé, not sure apart from Modric that there's been a player as good at holding onto the ball, he was incredible. As good as Vic was, and I ordered Vic, that ability on the ball was frightening.

It doesn’t matter what level the club is at, you should always have a succession plan.

The reason Brighton were comfortable letting Bissouma go was precisely because they believed Caiceido would either match or exceed his level. Same goes for Baleba now.

we’re basically back at the 2004 level and have to build ourselves back up. Then if we hit a tipping point like we did in 2017-18 this time make the correct calls.

Big clubs also sell their best players and move on. It happens.
