We have the worst recruitment team in the division by miles.
Now even Man Utd don’t want to waste money as bad as us nowadays.
This is harsh imho.
I’m sure lots will disagree but I actually don’t have a problem with the “player identification” in the last 3 seasons…Van der Ven, Maddison, Kudus, Danso, MGW* etc.
The problem is the execution - timing, wages and precise profiles (eg no creative passer, the MGW and Eze debacles). There was talk in January that we were after a deep lying creative passer for the summer, and the links to Hackney are encouraging in that he is the profile we are missing.
If Savinho has been identified as the bilateral winger who will elevate the ceiling of the team then I actually trust them to have made the right decision. What’s also clear is that De Zerbi will not entertain £50m of the budget on a player he doesn’t agree with. He either rates him already or has been convinced.
I’ve watched some highlights of him this (his worst) season and tbh I like what I see. Takes the ball in tight spaces, quick, good off either foot and has quality in both 1v1 and ball playing. He’s competing against Doku and Semenyo who are the two best in the premier league and so I don’t read too much into his lack of minutes at City.
If they bring in Robertson and Senesi then I think that’s also outstanding business. From where we are and what else we need to do I think it’s impossible to improve the current back four of Udogie, Van der Ven, Romero and Porro. But now in Robertson, Senesi, Danso and Spence we (finally) have a good quality alternative in each position (but also cover in terms of skillsets - ball playing, carrying, crossing, duels).
There’s a lot to do this summer but I actually feel very positive in that it’s De Zerbi who will dictate the required profile of player.
