I think it was a bit of mistake loaning him out so early, it might have been wise to keep him until the January windows, as cover for Xavi to give him a break. Until, Kulu gets back into action... Or a year for Maddison.

I have been impressed with him, when I have seen him.

Need to give more of our youngsters a real chance and see if they can fly.

We don't and end up getting mediocre crap anyway.

Two years older than Gray - I would have loaned Gray and kept Devine tbh, at least until Xmas

If Devine is that good why is he playing for Preston North End at 21 years old?

I’m not saying he can’t better. Just that maybe he’s at the right level for him right now.

This thread makes him out to be some super level talent.

A year in the Belgium pro league followed by PNE doesn’t shout that out to me.
But I’ve not seen him play for either of those teams. Maybe he’s amazing???

He's a good player from what I've seen, can play DM, CM and AM, has a very good pass, good drible. I think he could at least be a squad player for us.

Him, Moore or Donley, we clearly are a bit short of options.

Exactly.

One speculative shot and suddenly he is the next coming.

Has not even completed anything over 75 minutes for Preston, either started as a sub, not in squad or substituted off..

Market value of maybe 5m, did nothing in Belgium to warrant anything other than another loan out or sale.

I imagine he will be bought by a Championship club at end of season, and that will be his level, if he does improve he could get a move to a Prem club in few years

Started all but one of Preston games 7 games, played more than 75 minutes in two of them, scored two goal. You can have your opinion without lying.

Apart from the ones he didn't start or anything.
So far

QPR 15 mins as a sub
Leicester 73
Ipswich 73
Portsmouth - not in squad
Middlesbrough 62
Derby 85 (apologies thought it said 65 originally)

And yes scored 2 so far, including one screamer, still doesn't mean his market value is greater than maybe the 3-5m transfermarkt put him at, or he has a future at Spurs, or Spurs fans are going overboard because of one hit.
He may have a chance longer term of making a non-relegation fighting PL squad, but not so far based on the back of what he produced at Westerlo or Preston so far.

It’s always interesting to see where these lads end up. Progression or lack of is never linear.
I hope Devine does kick on and become a top level international player.

But I saw Harvey White scored a peach of a free kick the other day for Stevenage.

Not that long ago there were people on here touting him to be in our first team squad.

He’s a decent league one player. That’s it.

Indeed

In the last 20 years I cannot think of any players that we have let go of before having a chance at Spurs, that we have regretted letting go (although we very nearly did with Kane)

I just don’t see any of the current players we have out on loan that have come through academy, as being any better than numerous others that are now plying their trade in Championship or lower clubs.

It is a massive step from youth football to a top 6 sides squad, and only the exceptional make that transition, and in last dozen years we have not bought the exceptional in to our club at a young age.

We'll never know if we never give opportunity to them. Kane could well be in the Championship today if we didn't gave opportunty to him, based on his history of struggling on loan for Championship sides. Look at Scarlett, for instance, he performed better for us than for the Champo sides he's being loaned too and that's because he had better players around him. You can't just loan all you youth talents to Trash FC and hope they will become the new messiah, that never happened for us, of course, because we judge the players based on their performance for teams that are struggling in fucking Championship, we almost let Kane go.

Fact is you can count on your fingers the good players that came from youth level in English top clubs, because that's their philosophy, just buy the finished product instead of giving opportunity. Look at Palmer, for example, didn't have any chance for City. The grass is always greener on the outside. Now look at Barça, for example, why they have the best academy in ther world? Do you think by any chance because they are not affraid of givin opportunities to their youth? Now we are letting our best prospects end their carreers before 20 sending them to fucking Rangers.

One of them has to stick....

It's a well trodden path at Spurs....
Paul Moran, Mark Robson, Brian Statham, Nicky Barmby, Marcus Edwards.... Pop to mind. They were ALL gonna be the next big thing, with very mixed results...

I think Madueke might come close....

Putting Nicky Barmby in that list means you are just making shit up. He was quality at all levels.

Wouldn't say we let him go.
He chose to leave us at age 16, before was under contract, to join PSV as felt better chance of progressing, but the general point of overrating our youth players has been going on since time immemorial and continues to this day.

Ok. 2026. You can keep one of Scarlett and Lankshear.

Scarlett couldn’t score goals at a struggling team.
Lankshear can. Potential to be their top scorer this season.

Doesn’t that mean Lankshear is the better player?

I remember Ferguson telling united players who went on loan they had to be the best player at that club they were loaned to. Every match they should be aiming to be MOTM.
If not they weren’t worthy of the united shirt.

Didn’t sound like this is a mantra you would give your players.
Go on loan and just blend in with the shit there?

Spurs players should be elevating any lower league team they go to IMHO.

That would be the Dane Scarlett who in 2024/25 had 3 League substitute appearances for us totalling 31 minutes as opposed to the 20 Championship matches scoring 4, unless you are judging his whole he is "better for us" by his 24 minutes against Elfsborg.
Or would it be the 2023/24 version where had had 4 substitute appearances for 19 minutes ?
Or was it the 22/23 version where he didn't play for us but had 34 League One appearances totalling 4 goals.

I think Devine really has more chance than Scarlett of making it at decent level

I'm not even advocating Scarlett will make it, I'm saying an average player for a Championship side doing good for a top 6 teams when given an opportunity and play with better players. And I hope Lankshear is given opportunities here too, it's not that hard to give some minutes to our most promising players.
