Remember back when we could manage a R16/QF in the CL and mount a respectable league campaign at the same time?

Heady times!

I'm excited to hear replies about how the EL is really better than the CL, and how league performance is an illusion. Really invigorating debate, surely.

When was that?

Poch got to 1 European final. Never got beyond last 16 in other seasons - and yes, we got 3 wins from our final 12 league games (What??? Did Poch sacrifice the league to try and win a trophy - god forbid!!). And yes, everyone on this forum was calling for Poch to be sacked mid-season.

Conte/Mourinho never got out of last 16.

Aside from that, we last got to a QF in 2012 under AVB. 15 years ago.

I said R16 in my original post.

Reaching R16 is hardly a successful European campaign.

The good news is, we are winning Europa this season and then in the summer; finally getting rid of the unwanted players (Forster, Reggie, Bissouma, Richarlison, Werner, Davies, Whiteman) and bringing is some real top quality!

COYS!

We were competing in CHAMPIONS LEAGUE my dear Harry! And we had successful league campaigns at the same time, where we managed to finish 5th or higher!

Getting knocked out in the last 16 isn't competing. Its losing.

And if finishing 5th or higher; with no trophy's is a successful campaign for you - then are supporting the compromised shite that Levy has been dealing us for years.

It seems all anybody wants is top 4. Thats the yardstick of success. We can't possibly risk trying to win a competition, because it may hurt our chances of qualifying next year. Lol

No worries- we'll win EL as you say- and have lost almost every single meaningful derby match in that time! What a great season! Getting merciless dicked about by our rivals while folks like yourself would be happy to ignore it and trumpet winning a minor cup.

Hope you've been having fun while Ange learns on the job.

Out of curiosity, which one of these would you consider a good season?

- Finish 3rd, but lose all games against Woolwich and Chelsea. No Cups.
- Finish 6th, but do double over Woolwich and Chelsea. No Cups.
- Win Europa league, finish bottom half in league, lose all games against Woolwich and Chelsea

None- and I reject being offered choices curated by yourself for the purposes of your argument.

A quality football club with the right coach can compete in all competitions naturally without needing to overtly sacrifice competitions simply to try and perform in one of them.

Fucking hell the shit you spout makes me physically sick. We aren’t going to be 16th in the league because of the toils and hardcore focus on getting past AZ Alkmaar, we’re going to be 16th because we are diabolical.

We aren’t winning the europa league no matter how many times you fantasise about it, we’re just going to be left with an empty husk of a season. Nobody needs to borderline be in a relegation battle to compete for a Europa league title.

We are 16th because of injuries to all of our Center Backs & Keepers - Romero, VDV, Dragusin, Davies, Danso, Forster, Vicario.

We haven't had a settled defense all season, and playing with advanced full backs makes us vulnerable at the back. We could ditch our system, and just revert to playing defensive and long balls - but that doesn't help with the development of the players and just leaves us treading water.

Now we have most of our squad back, I'd expect we will see better football - however there is nothing at all left to do in the league. That ship has sailed. The only competition we are now in is the Europa League.

We finished 4th that season, got to a CL final, hell we even had a 5M net profit in the summer transfer window, and he wasn't sacked mid season.

Poor planning...he's trying bless him but this interview hasn't set me on fire...looks like he's losing weight...

He’s saying that they got the transfer market and overall season planning wrong in terms of Europe and PL demands.

Tbh that validates the criticism of him not understanding Premier League level.

I think naming Romero Vice Captain also looks naive now.

But, there is also a weird clarity forming in the squad. They all know Romero will probably be off and they probably know Ange is probably going as well but in a weird way that can remove distractions and sharpen the focus a bit. The pressure is off because and all they have to focus on is football. Plus the squad is healthier than its ever been

I do like the huge pressure that's on him and the players to win this Europa this season due to the circumstances. As this is what it should be like every season under every manager in that regard. Anything other than winning a trophy or getting to a final/title challenge at least should be seen as a failure and your job on the line.

no more loser mentality

Tbh, the smartest thing Levy could do is tell Romero “We’ll sell you to Atleti for a reduced price if you lead this team to the Europa League. Give us everything for two months and go with our blessing.” Of course any 10m less on the fee is peanuts when compared to a season in the CL.

I'd give him a pass on that because there was f all else to name captains but that's on the recruitment and squad planning, when you run a youth project then there's not going to be many chiefs amongst the herd.
